Established in 1951, the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization whose examinations are universally accepted for optometric licensure in the United States and accepted internationally.  NBEO’s mission is to serve the public and the profession of Optometry by developing, administering, scoring and reporting results of valid examinations that assess competence.  NBEO has a full-time staff of 16 and utilizes over 100 optometrists as subject-matter experts nationwide in support of its examination programs.  We are currently seeking talented individuals to join our office in Charlotte, NC.

The National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) is hiring part-time Standardized Patients (SP’s).  SP’s are trained to participate in a clinical skills exam performed by Optometry candidates as part of their National Board Examination.  SP’s are trained to portray real-life “patients” in order to simulate a set of symptoms or problems.  Any portion of the exam that requires the candidate to come in direct contact with the SP’s eyes will be proctored by a licensed Doctor of Optometry.  SP applicants are interviewed and thoroughly screened by staff to ensure they meet certain ocular requirements before being considered as potential employees. Only applicants with a glasses or contact lens prescription will be considered.

In addition to meeting the ocular requirements, ideal applicants should:

be comfortable being examined by health professionals
  be reliable and punctual
  possess great attention to detail
be comfortable providing feedback about a candidate’s performance
be comfortable having exams video and audio recorded for scoring and education purposes
be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening

Standardized Patients generally work between 12 and 20 hours a week, and the work schedule is flexible.  Starting pay is $15.00 an hour.  Parking costs are covered. To support the health and safety of NBEO employees and optometry candidates, NBEO requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or to have received from NBEO an approved accommodation based on medical condition or sincerely held religious belief or practice.

To apply, please email your resume and glasses prescription to NCCTO@optometry.org and include “Standardized Patient” in the subject line.
