Adela’s mission is to deliver innovative and accessible blood tests that harness biology to transform cancer care and improve well-being. The company is developing best-in-class technology to accelerate the diagnosis and improve the management of cancer through blood tests for minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring and multi-cancer early detection (MCED). Adela’s blood-based, tissue-free product ensures universal accessibility to MRD testing for patients with cancer, eliminating any dependency on tumor tissue availability. Adela’s first product was recently clinically validated for predicting and surveilling for recurrence in patients with head & neck cancer and published in Annals of Oncology.
Adela is seeking a Principal/ Senior Full Stack Engineer to join our Software Engineering team, building the internal systems that support our laboratory workflows and diagnostics development. This role focuses on developing the foundational software used by our wet lab scientists and clinical teams by enabling sample tracking, workflow automation, metadata capture, and quality control. This remote position is open to candidates authorized to work in the U.S. or Canada. No visa sponsorship is available.
You will lead the development of scalable, user-friendly applications using React on the frontend and Django on the backend. These tools form the backbone of our LIMS-like infrastructure, enabling experimental and clinical teams to generate high-integrity data and reproducible workflows. In addition to writing high-quality software, you’ll help drive cross-functional initiatives, shape architectural decisions, and guide system design and scope definition. You’ll be expected to mentor teammates, bring clarity to ambiguous problem spaces, and ensure our systems meet both technical and regulatory needs.
As a Principal/ Senior Full Stack Engineer, you’ll take ownership of system architecture documentation and help define and maintain system requirements in alignment with INCOSE-based systems engineering practices. You’ll be responsible for the infrastructure-as-code that supports software delivery, including maintaining Terraform modules for provisioning AWS resources such as IAM roles, compute, storage, and networking. This role requires an appreciation for security from day one, designing systems that are robust, auditable, and compliant.
We’re looking for someone who enjoys translating complex workflows into intuitive tools. You should bring a user-centric mindset, understanding that great internal tools need clear UX even in technically deep domains. As our data models and operational complexity grow, your ability to handle rich, evolving schemas and work closely with stakeholders across R&D and clinical teams will be critical. This role is well-suited for someone looking to grow into technical leadership or engineering management over time.
Our Tech Stack:
- Python, React, Django, Spark, SQL, Databricks, MLflow, Nextflow, C/C++, AWS, Terraform
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain full stack applications to support lab operations and experimental workflows.
- Develop APIs and backend services using Django and Python.
- Build performant, modern frontends using React and related frameworks.
- IaC with Terraform and AWS including provisioning roles, compute, storage, and networking to support application delivery
- Work closely with scientists, bioinformaticians, and QA teams to ensure systems meet both R&D and regulatory needs.
- Help shape our architecture and engineering practices as we scale.
Work Experience & Skill Requirements
- 5-8+ years of experience in software development, software engineering, and/or distributed systems.
- Experience working in a startup environment, with a collaborative and adaptable approach to evolving priorities, and a willingness to contribute across areas while helping the team move work forward together.
- Proven ability to work effectively in fully remote or distributed teams, maintaining strong communication, accountability, and collaboration across time zones, and consistently performing at a high level in a remote-first environment.
- Strong experience with React and modern frontend development practices.
- Proficiency in Python and backend frameworks, especially Django.
- Experience building internal tools or data-heavy applications that support scientific or operational workflows.
- A strong ability to collaborate across scientific, engineering, and clinical teams including translating complex, ambiguous requirements into robust software systems and documented architectures.
- Experience managing basic cloud infrastructure with Terraform and AWS including provisioning roles, compute, storage, and networking to support application delivery.
- A desire to work on systems that directly impact healthcare and diagnostics, with an interest in growing into technical leadership or engineering management.
Nice to haves:
- Experience with LIMS, scientific workflows, or lab data systems.
- Integrating software workflows with physical lab device output (e.g., sequencers, QC instruments)
- Familiarity with regulated environments (e.g., CLIA, FDA, ISO 13485).
