Position Summary: 

To be a positive role model for the residents and to help foster a safe and inclusive living environment. RAs are to work collaboratively with the Residential Community Coordinator (RCC), Housing Staff, Facilities, and the Dean of Students to promote the mission of the university and promote a safe and inclusive environment. The position is a live-in, part-time position, and RAs will receive housing as compensation. RAs must be full-time SFBU students.

This is a part-time, non-exempt, student position. The role is designed to support full-time students enrolled at SFBU and complies with applicable educational exemptions under California law. RAs are expected to dedicate approximately 15–20 hours per week to their responsibilities, and housing is provided as compensation in accordance with California labor code guidelines. A written housing agreement will outline the voluntary nature of this arrangement.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

 

  • Support a group of residents ranging from 12 - 22.

  • Conduct check-ins with residents. The purpose is to ensure they are getting connected, aware of resources, courses are going well, and they are referred to any necessary departments for support. Check-ins can be done via phone, WhatsApp, or in person.

    • Conduct bi-weekly check-ins with residents starting the first week of class: 

      • August and September and January and February

    • Conduct a check in one time month for the remaining months in the semester: 

      • October, November, March, April

      • Summer: June, July when applicable

  • Promote and participate in campus program attendance and participation.

  • Facilities Issues/Concerns- when reported by the resident, ensure the resident is aware of the proper way to report the concern and follow up to ensure the problem is resolved.

  • Host community builders/social programs throughout the semester.

  • Take students to campus wide programs and events throughout the semester.

  • Participate in Residence Life and Housing Orientation as scheduled.

  • Support Move-In and Move-Out process.

  • Participate in RA Training.

  • Check Email regularly and respond to messages from the Dean of Students, Residential Community Coordinator, Housing, and Facilities as needed. 

  • Participate in bi-weekly Residence Life and Housing staff meetings as scheduled.

  • Facilitate roommate agreements with assigned residents.

  • Conduct Health and Safety Checks as scheduled. 

  • Serve as a first point of contact during minor conflicts, escalating serious concerns to the Residential Community Coordinator or Dean of Students as appropriate.

  • Adhere to and enforce all university housing policies and code of conduct within residential areas.

  • Participate in crisis response or emergency procedures as trained, including fire drills, wellness checks, or safety evacuations.

  • Document and report any violations of housing policies, safety concerns, or incidents in a timely and professional manner.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student issues, conduct, or wellness, in accordance with FERPA and university policy.

  • Estimated time commitment for core RA duties ranges from 15–20 hours per week, subject to periodic variation based on semester needs. Any duties exceeding this scope will be tracked and compensated in accordance with applicable wage and hour laws.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as an SFBU undergraduate or graduate student. 

  • Undergraduate GPA requirement  2.5 GPA unless scholarship or visa standing requires a different GPA above a 2.5.

  • Graduate GPA requirement 3.0 GPA unless scholarship or visa standing requires a different GPA above a 3.0. 

  • Good Academic Standing and Good Conduct Standing.

  • Sophomore/2nd-year student standing and above UG student or completed one year of masters level coursework.

  • Available to perform in the position for the full Academic Year (August-May)  

  • Be able to participate in and complete RA training in August.

  • Live in assigned residential facilities.

  • Demonstrated maturity, accountability, and good judgment in decision-making.

  • Must be in and maintain compliance with all student housing agreements and campus health/ safety protocols, as applicable.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information in a professional manner.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.

  • Enthusiastic, approachable, and patient demeanor.

  • Knowledge of campus resources and student services (preferred)

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands  (Examples listed below)

 

  • Job duties typically performed in an office environment.

  • Physical demands may include lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, sitting, driving.

  • The employee is occasionally required to sit or stand for long periods.



Salary Range (Required): RAs will receive housing as their compensation. 

RAs will receive housing as their primary form of compensation. The estimated fair market value of the housing is $1,200 per month, which is applied toward wages in accordance with California Labor Code §1182.8.

RAs are expected to work approximately 15–20 hours per week, which equates to an estimated monthly compensation range of $1,200–$1,600 at the standard hourly rate of $20 per hour.

  • The housing credit is applied toward this compensation.

  • Any hours worked beyond the value covered by housing will be paid at $20/hour.

  • If required by wage and hour laws, SFBU will ensure compensation meets or exceeds applicable minimum wage requirements.

This compensation structure is designed in compliance with California labor regulations, including Fremont’s minimum wage requirements.

RAs will not be required to perform on-call duties or respond to emergencies outside their scheduled responsibilities unless separately compensated.

A written housing agreement outlining the voluntary acceptance of housing in lieu of wages will be provided and must be signed prior to the start of the position.
