Consider Joining Our Growing Team

Biostatistician

Green River is looking for a Biostatistician or Data Scientist to help our team of impact-driven developers build software that makes a difference. The Biostatistician will clean, load, and model data to help ensure our software solutions improve lives in fields such as health, education, and environmental protection. This role is less about teasing out trends and forecasts from “big data” and more about helping Green River and its clients inject “continuous improvement” processes into projects—understanding the rich data we work with, what it says about stakeholders (often vulnerable or disempowered populations), the influenceable metrics, and the progress along those metrics that iterative, data-evidenced strategies can make.

Incorporated in 2000, Green River is a custom web application development firm with a strong engineering focus and dedication to “software and analytics for a better world.” Our projects offer challenges in developing complex, scalable algorithms and well-designed responsive user interfaces—and, now more than ever, analyzing and measuring the impact of our solutions and ensuring they benefit the people we want to serve. Our company enjoys a collaborative atmosphere and values a workplace where you can learn and laugh; together we shape the kind of work and lifestyle we want and foster career paths through mentorship. This has resulted in exceptionally long-term relationships with both staff and clients. Our primary offices are in scenic Brattleboro, Vermont, and we have distributed staff living and working around the country. Our current clients include Starbucks, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of Boston, the State of Delaware, World Resources Institute, Reach Out and Read, and many other domestic and international non-profit organizations. We believe in our clients’ work and are committed to being good partners in their success.

Data Scientist is a new role at Green River, and the incumbent will help shape our engagement with clients, from identifying human-scale goals our software can help achieve—the transformation in human welfare it can influence—to designing and implementing techniques to measure progress towards those goals. We look for team members who believe in working to make the world a better place—candidates committed to public health, school improvement, environmental protection, and social justice—yet bring a grounded professionalism appropriate to our clients and the scale of our projects.

As a Biostatistician, you will:

  • Extract and transform data from multiple sources in preparation for data analysis and modeling

  • Use statistical and machine learning techniques to assist in measuring the impact a project is having on people’s lives

  • Help design presentations of analysis results that are understandable to the less technical users and assist them with the interpretation of the results

  • Propose new techniques and technologies to solve known problems and identify new ways to measure project impact

  • Work closely with the development teams to integrate analyses into the software applications

We’d love to hear from people with:

  • Education and experience in biostatistics and public health. Backgrounds in other aspects of statistics, mathematics, computer science, and/or engineering with competency in working with public health, time series. and spatial data will also be considered.

  • The ability to extract insights and determine utility of data in measuring the impact of the project

  • A background in social, biological, or environmental sciences

  • Knowledge of Python or R or SAS, and competency in SQL; Experience with AWS Analytics services is a plus

You would stand out if:

  • Your statistics skills were honed in a health, education, environmental, homelessness, and/or other socioeconomic and human-welfare context

  • You have technical or non-technical working experience with—or other direct exposure to—disadvantaged populations (e.g. via community service, humanitarian aid, social entrepreneurship, personal experience, etc.)

We offer a competitive salary, 100% health insurance coverage, five weeks paid time off, and retirement benefits.
