Consider Joining Our Growing Team!

Software User Experience (UX) Lead: Generative Researcher and Participatory Design Strategist

Green River is looking for someone to join our team of designers and engineers to help craft effective software solutions, especially where they interface with — and can positively impact — vulnerable and underserved communities. We seek candidates committed to public health, school improvement, environmental protection, and social justice.

Incorporated in 2000, Green River is a custom web application development firm with a strong engineering focus and dedication to “software and analytics for a better world.” Our projects entail developing complex, scalable algorithms and well-designed, responsive user interfaces. Our current clients include Starbucks (C.A.F.E. Practices ethical sourcing verification program), the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of Boston, the State of Delaware, World Resources Institute, Reach Out and Read, and many other domestic and international non-profit organizations. We believe in our clients’ work and are committed to being good partners in their success.

Green River fosters a collaborative atmosphere and values a workplace where we can learn and laugh together. We have exceptionally long-term relationships with our staff, and with our clients. We are based in scenic Brattleboro, Vermont, though most of us work remotely from our homes around the country. We look for team members who believe in making the world a better place, and bring a grounded professionalism appropriate to our clients and the scale of our projects.

We are seeking a User Experience Lead to help ensure that we develop software that effectively supports the ultimate beneficiaries of our systems: our clients often serve vulnerable, disempowered, and disadvantaged communities, and the software we craft needs to support and engage not only administrative and agency-level users, but deliberately include the needs and perspectives of the individuals ultimately being served as well.

We are looking for someone who can bring to Green River:

  • Experience implementing participatory design and user-centered design concepts and methods in commercial/business or mission-driven contexts;

  • Track record of conducting “on-the-ground” user research studies, including recruiting users, completing in-person and remote interviews, and executing usability observation;

  • Fluency in UX design, distributed collaboration, remote ideation, and prototyping.

The successful candidate will also have:

  • Outstanding research abilities to identify, grok, and communicate within the social landscapes of our work;

  • A proven ability to translate needs and perspectives of diverse stakeholders to other stakeholders;

  • A natural curiosity and open demeanor conducive to authentic listening and querying;

  • Patience, tact, gentle persistence, and the ability to establish rapport with a diverse section of humanity.

Additional experience that would make you stand out:

  • Experience with creating data visualizations and data-driven communications;

  • Familiarity with web accessibility standards and universal design principles;

  • Prior work involving disadvantaged populations.

We offer a competitive salary, 100% health insurance coverage, five weeks paid time off, and retirement benefits.

To be considered for this position, please submit your cover letter and resume, including links to recent work and a description of your role in that work.
