Medical Data Engineer

Green River is looking for a software engineer with expertise in HL7 integration and, broadly, experience working with Medicaid records and other various healthcare data and platforms. We seek candidates broadly committed to social justice issues, including school improvement and environmental protection, as well as public health. As the climate changes, the population increases, and critical resource thresholds are breached, data and information systems are playing an increasingly important role in defining and delivering solutions—for both economic benefit and human and ecological health. This vision drives us at Green River.

Incorporated in 2000, Green River is a custom web application development firm with a strong engineering focus and dedication to “software and analytics for a better world.” Our projects offer challenges in developing complex, scalable algorithms and well-designed responsive user interfaces. We regularly evolve our approach to software development as new best practices emerge. Our company enjoys a collaborative atmosphere and values a workplace where you can learn and laugh—together we shape the kind of work and lifestyle we want and foster career paths through mentorship. This has resulted in exceptionally long-term relationships with both staff and clients. Our primary offices are in scenic Brattleboro, Vermont, and we have distributed staff living and working around the country. Our current clients include Starbucks, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of Boston, the State of Delaware, World Resources Institute, Reach Out and Read, and many other domestic and international non-profit organizations. We believe in our clients’ work and are committed to being good partners in their success.

The Medical Data Engineer will work in small teams with our clients and Green River project managers and software engineers to incorporate medical data capabilities into our Open Path data integration platform (openpath.host) and other projects. We have enjoyed success helping clients nationwide use Open Path primarily to improve services for the homeless (e.g. merging HMIS records, centrally collecting client information, streamlining reporting) and now seek to refine and bolster the platform’s facility to consume, combine, and analyze Medicaid claim histories, medical services records, and other healthcare information. We look for team members who believe in working to make the world a better place, yet bring a grounded professionalism appropriate to our clients and the scale of our projects. In addition:

Our Medical Data Engineer will need:

  • Every-day comfort with software development including relational databases; Docker; Git (or other versioning system); and etc.

  • Specific experience with API integrations and data scaling in the medical data and health care context context (HL7, FHIR, X12, Medicaid claims)

  • Deep appreciation of medical data in terms of its real-life origins (i.e. patients, both able and otherwise) and real-life applications (providers, insurance, state and federal programs, etc.)

  • Professionalism in designing for and working securely with confidential data subject to HIPAA, GDPR, and other regulations

  • Proficiency with one or more scripting languages: Shell, PHP, Perl, Ruby

  • EMR or equivalent experience

You would stand out if you also brought experience/skills with:

  • Amazon Web Services

  • Data trending and analytics using R

  • Machine learning

  • Predictive analytics

  • Creating data visualizations

  • Web accessibility standards and universal design principles

  • Non-technical working experience with—or other direct exposure to—disadvantaged populations (e.g. via community service, humanitarian aid, social entrepreneurship, personal experience, etc.)

We offer a competitive salary, 100% health insurance coverage, five weeks paid time off, and retirement benefits.
