A part of the Breakthrough Energy Platform, Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) is a purpose-built investment firm seeking to invest in, launch, and scale global companies that will eliminate greenhouse gas emissions through the economy.  BEV is committed to supporting entrepreneurs and their breakthrough companies by bringing to bear a unique combination of technical, operational, market, and policy expertise.  BEV evaluates companies for investment based on their ability to:

  • Create technologies that have been deemed scientifically feasible with the potential to reduce greenhouse gases, at scale, by at least a half a gigaton every year.
  • Attract other investors.
  • Fill critical gaps in climate tech that are often neglected.

 

BEV categorizes companies based on five grand challenges: Agriculture, Buildings, Electricity, Manufacturing, and Transportation.

 

About the Role

BEV is seeking an investment associate to engage in a range of core investment team functions including thesis development, investment due diligence, financial analysis, competitive analysis, portfolio company support, and other efforts.  The Associate will work alongside and report to BEV Partners, a group of experienced venture capitalists, technologists, and other professionals.  BEV is committed to the exposure and career development to prepare associates for career advancement.

Responsibilities include:

  • Thesis development
    • Develop expertise in specific areas in collaboration with other team members and build out and/or contribute to thesis papers and presentations.
  • Investment due diligence
    • Meet with executive team members of companies that represent prospective investments.
    • Work with partners to identify key areas of exploration including market, product-market fit, technology, techno-economic analysis, returns analysis, and other aspects of consideration, and conduct detailed analysis of identified topics.
    • Prepare key diligence materials including presentations and memos detailing the diligence analysis and key risks and considerations.
    • Make presentations and lead discussions with partners on potential investments.
  • Financial analysis
    • Perform detailed financial analysis including financial projections, returns analysis and other analysis.
  • Competitive analysis
    • Perform competitive analysis of key sectors, identifying key members of the field and their relative attributes.
  • Portfolio support
    • Support portfolio companies in a variety of manners.
    • Support follow-on investments and associated diligence and analysis.
  • Ecosystem Development
    • Support the development and execution of various ecosystem building events including workshops, technical convenings, social convenings, educational platforms, and others
  • Other responsibilities as determined.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Passion for climate change and innovations to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Undergraduate degree in a quantitative field (Business, engineering, science, math) required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 1-3 years of experience in in investment management, venture capital, private equity, management consulting, investment banking or similar field related to detailed financial analysis; Candidates with 2 – 3 years experienced in a technical field with similar analytical skills will also be considered.
