Job Description

 The High Voltage & Compliance Engineer will be responsible for supporting the design, installation, and maintenance of generation equipment and components. This position will also act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on for North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Standards associated with engineering aspects such as, protection and control, modeling, high-voltage facility design, etc.  This includes, but is not limited to event analysis, technical support, direct field support, process and procedure development, audit support, internal and external communications, training, and project management. This position will take a lead role on industry committees related to engineering compliance activities. The position will also be responsible for assisting the Regulatory Affairs Team in maintaining compliance with NERC and Regional Reliability Standards and FERC Regulations for a fleet of PV and Wind assets throughout the USA. The engineer will prepare projects under development and construction for compliance with NERC Operations and Planning Reliability Standards while supporting and implementing the AREVON Internal Compliance Program for operating assets. . The role will report directly to the VP of Asset Management.

 

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

 

·        Act as SME with the creation and maintenance of internal documentation, procedures, processes, and guidelines to demonstrate compliance with NERC engineering standards such as, PRC, FAC, VAR & MOD families of standards and support compliance for other applicable GO/GOP standards as required.

·        Work alongside the Regulatory Affairs Team to refine procedures and best practices, and mitigate risk using new or existing job tools. Lead periodic, on site walk-downs of components to confirm accuracy of facility rating and modeling data. Ensure operating projects are prepared for compliance with NERC O&P reliability standards for future years.

 ·        Lead/conduct event analyses associated with protection operations and human performance events.

·        Provides highly advanced expertise with technical issues regarding protection and control maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting including the ability to lead engineers and technicians in performing design, maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of protection and control equipment.

·        Evaluate the operations of protection systems and determine with engineering judgement whether the operations occurred as intended andfy determine such operations are NERC reportable.

·        Develop functional tests for protection and control schemes to verify proper operation.

·        Update firmware and settings on protection and control equipment & develop protective relay settings.

·        Performs studies, modeling, and analysis of protection system settings and schemes and develop schemes and standards for protection systems.

·        Provides oversight, including budgeting, of large, complex projects.

·        Provides oversight for engineering and construction contractors. Prepare projects under development & construction for compliance with NERC Operations & Planning (O&P) standards in collaboration with contractors and internal resources. Preparation includes contract drafting, tracking progress with engineers and external contractors, and coordination of information needed for compliance studies between multiple internal and external parties.

  

Experience Requirements


·        Four (4) years of engineering experience in Protection & Controls and developing and maintaining engineering models.

Demonstrated working knowledge of NERC reliability standards and regulations, specifically PRC, MOD, FAC, COM, and CIP standards.

·        Ability to demonstrate a technical understanding of power plant systems & Strong Plant Controls Systems Knowledge.

·        Experience with substation control devices and programming substation relays (GE, SEL, etc.).

·        Proven track record of working well within a team environment, taking ownership of processes and procedures.

·        Excellent interpersonal skills, highly motivated and results oriented, process oriented with strong organizational and communication skills.

·        Proficient on MS Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, etc.

 

Education Requirements

  • At a minimum, Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
