Measures for Justice

Part Time

Measures for Justice is a non-partisan, fast-paced, entrepreneurial non-profit on a mission to make good criminal justice data available and actionable to spur reform. While we do not advocate for any specific reforms, we do work to make change possible by increasing system transparency, trust, and accountability. We’ve got world class criminal justice data and technology chops. And a culture that demands excellence, rigor and people who like to make good ideas come to life.

To make it happen, we deploy three strategies:

1. We show people what criminal justice looks like across the country via our free, interactive Data Portal;

2. We help standardize and improve criminal justice data via work on the state and national level

3. We help put criminal justice data to work with tools, services, and research.

Since 2011, we have pioneered a methodology to compare how different justice systems perform on the county level and led the charge to improve county-level criminal justice data. We have strong support from prominent philanthropists, in particular from leading technology entrepreneurs and criminal justice foundations from both sides of the aisle, across the country, as well as from system practitioners and policymakers nationwide.

The Job 

MFJ’s Research & Data Processing (RDP) team works on coding, cleaning, and analyzing the data in order to populate the measures. The Research & Strategic Initiatives (RSI) team works on research projects in partnership with external agencies, practitioners, and communities. As a Research Intern at MFJ, your position will function within both the RDP and RSI teams, and report to the Research Fellow, and Senior Research management where you will be responsible for helping MFJ develop a system to measure the performance of local criminal justice delivery. MFJ provides all staff with the required technology to meet job expectations. Research Interns work up to 20 hours per week, and are part-time, non-exempt employees.

What You Will Do

• Codifying state criminal statutes and charge descriptions into a uniform code to allow for comparisons across states.

• Aiding in the development of a standard operating procedure specific to criminal justice agencies.

• Any other research tasks as defined by Senior Research management.

About You

• Undergraduate or graduate status in good academic standing

• Experience using Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel

• Experience with Google platforms, particularly Google Sheets

• Working knowledge of legal terms, definitions, and criminal justice procedure
