The Job

You will be charged with raising MFJ’s profile among key criminal justice stakeholders; and bringing together criminal justice practitioners particularly prosecutors, police, and courts, with the communities they serve to interpret and use performance measurement data, and to facilitate discussions re: setting policy goals. The immediate objective will be to create a model for engagement that establishes the use of MFJ’s data in ongoing decision-making and practices in communities throughout the country in a scalable, high impact way.

You are someone who is adept at navigating and building relationships at the grasstops level, as well as helping community members tell their stories - the lived experiences - that the data represent, so that the upholders of the system can get a fuller view of the impact the system has on the community. This is a key role that will report into a member of the Executive Team and supervise a small team.

What You Will Do 

  • Lead Engagement and Data Outreach Team to help raise awareness of and trust in MFJ among communities nationwide, particularly those most impacted by the criminal justice system, as well as with criminal justice practitioners nationally and locally.

  • While not a sales function, you help drive interest in MFJ’s products and services, as well as to help report the “voice of the customer” back to the Product Team to inform product development.

  • Facilitate coordination between Engagement & Data Outreach Team, and Product,  Research, Tech, and Communications Teams across data collection, assessment, processing, and dissemination to ensure seamless transitions across data lifecycle.

  • Establish community engagement models, practices, and metrics to track performance. 

  • Work with local community groups to facilitate conversations around using data for reform with prosecutor offices and police departments.

  • Develop Engagement and Data Outreach Team to serve as the main point of contact for local community groups and criminal justice agencies to implement MFJ products and services. Requires close collaboration with MFJ’s product teams.

  • Work with policy makers, practitioners, and advocates to interpret policy and practice implications of performance measurement into lay terms to inform reform efforts. 

  • Represent MFJ at relevant criminal justice national meetings, prepare reports, presentations, and fact sheets for audiences with varying knowledge about research methodology, data infrastructure, and criminal legal system policy and practice.

  • Ideally also support national efforts to improve criminal justice data policy, including meeting with policy makers and advocates to discuss state-specific needs in data collection, centralization, and transparency; drafting legislation; developing reports to assess state and local criminal justice data landscapes; and coordinating with MFJ’s communication team to generate media attention.

About You 

  • Minimum of eight or more years of experience leading community organizing initiatives and campaigns that advance racial justice and reforms to public systems.

  • Broad understanding of key issues in criminal justice research and reform, as well as familiarity with roles/responsibilities of various criminal legal system actors preferred.

  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships, partnerships, and coalitions of organizations, community members/leaders, and public officials at the local, state and national levels.

  • Experience actively collaborating with local government partners on racial equity issues

  • Experience supervising and managing staff, including developing work plans, providing feedback and guidance, and seeking and offering staff opportunities for professional development.

  • Experience presenting to diverse audiences, including advocates, practitioners, policymakers, and other researchers (preferred but not required).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to tailor communication for different audiences.

  • Strong initiative and creative thinking. 

  • Willingness to travel (once travel returns).
