DESCRIPTION 

NatureServe is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our team in a part-time, temporary role (with a possibility of extension) as a GIS Governance Fellow. The GIS Governance Fellow will play a key role in advancing NatureServe's mission by supporting the development and implementation of a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) governance structure and processes across the organization. The Fellow will work closely with NatureServe spatial analysis, IT, and software development teams to ensure the effective use of GIS technologies and data for conservation planning, decision-making, and action.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Develop and implement governance structures and processes for GIS data and technology within NatureServe, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
  2. Collaborate with internal teams to assess current GIS capabilities, identify gaps and opportunities, and develop strategies for improvement.
  3. Support the development and implementation of GIS projects and initiatives, including data collection, analysis, and visualization.
  4. Contribute to the development of GIS policies, procedures, and documentation to ensure consistency and transparency in GIS activities. Additionally, provide guidance and support to staff in the use of GIS technologies and data, including training, troubleshooting, and best practices.
  5. Stay informed about emerging trends and technologies in GIS and conservation science and recommend opportunities for innovation and advancement.
  6. Represent NatureServe in meetings, workshops, and conferences related to GIS governance.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in geography, GIS, conservation science, natural resource management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in GIS, with demonstrated expertise in data management and developing and implementing governance structures and processes for GIS data and technology.
  • Strong understanding of GIS principles, techniques, and software, including Esri ArcGIS Enterprise, Survey 123 and AGOL.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, meet deadlines, and deliver high-quality results.
  • Team player and ability to interact efficiently with geographically dispersed colleagues.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  1. Experience with natural heritage data and methods.
  2. Knowledge of conservation science principles and practices is preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to converse verbally and in writing with others regarding organizational goals and needs.
  • Ability to use organizational technology.
