DESCRIPTION:  

The Science Communications Specialist will help implement the strategic marketing and communication plan to assist in “telling NatureServe’s story.” The Specialist should possess expertise in content development, writing, and editing. The position should also feel comfortable in digital communications, visual communications inducing video editing, and graphic design. The Specialist will provide oversight of our communications efforts related to design, tone, quality control, and organizational positioning. The Specialist will assist in maintaining social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) and website, and continually create and update print and digital marketing materials. As needed, the Specialist also will support project-based business development efforts.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Participate in the implementation of the marketing and communications strategy
  • Help develop and shape a company brand image implemented through written and visual communications
  • Create company literature and other forms of communication, including thought leadership material
  • Create marketing and promotional materials, both print and electronic
  • Work with NatureServe and Network staff to develop fresh content ideas and tell effective impact stories and assist in the development of other key messages tailored to specific audiences
  • Copy edit, proofread, and revise communications
  • “Translate” scientific materials for outreach to multiple audiences
  • Assist in designing and launching email marketing campaigns
  • Create and deliver press releases, Op-Eds, media relations content, case studies, white papers, executive bios, corporate newsletter content, social media content, and speaking proposals
  • Assist in researching media coverage and industry trends
  • Assist in media outreach
  • Assist in devising and implementing division’s organizational/operational best practices

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must possess a PhD in a relevant discipline (ecology, biology, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Spanish
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Fluent in emerging platforms and innovative methods of storytelling and engagement, including but not limited to social media, ArcGIS online, blogs, videography etc.
  • Experience creating science focused multimedia content strongly preferred
  • Excellent writing, editing, research, grammar and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of people and be a team player. Employs effective listening skills, diplomacy, tact, and a strong work ethic
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and coordinate the work of other staff
  • Ability to produce tangible results, often under pressure with tight deadlines. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a poised, efficient, and effective way with attention to detail
  • Ability to make decisions, solve problems, and set priorities in the face of multiple tasks and projects. Efficient, productive, and accurate
  • Well-organized and able to keep records up-to-date and accurate
  • Advanced problem-solving abilities and a positive “can-do” attitude
  • Able to provide thoughtful feedback on projects
  • Intermediate proficiency with MS Office Suite software
  • Willingness and ability to commit to the mission and goals of NatureServe

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel to meetings independently and carry presentation equipment and documents
  • Ability to converse verbally and in writing with others regarding organizational goals and needs
  • Ability to use organizational technology and multi-phone systems
