Position Summary: NewSchool is seeking dynamic and qualified part-time instructors to serve as faculty in our Interior Architecture & Design program teaching second year and third year Design Studio, in 2023 Winter and Spring terms. Appointments will be part-time and will be made on a term-by-term bases. NewSchool faculty members educate and provide learning opportunities for students through face-to face, blended, and/or online delivery methods. They promote and facilitate student success by creating an environment conducive to learning and student involvement.

Examples of Interior Design Studios:

ID202 INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO II

Credits: 6

Prerequisite: ID201

Schedule: 10 hours weekly [Lecture (2), Lab (8)]

Building on schematic designs completed in Interior Design Studio I (ID201), students develop design concepts, design development and preliminary construction drawings for small scale residential and commercial interiors. They integrate building systems and structures into their design concepts. They investigate design decision-making to fully complete design development into solutions and present those solutions in construction drawings.

ID203 INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO III

Credits: 6

Prerequisite: ID202

Schedule: 10 hours weekly [Lecture (2), Lab (8)]

Students focus on medium-scale hospitality or retail interiors. Based on a given program, students will complete schematic and design development phases of design and integrate lighting as a form giver to interiors. They will finalize their design solutions in a set of construction drawings, including section drawings and design details.

ID302 INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO V

Credits: 6

Prerequisite: ID301

Schedule: 10 hours weekly [Lecture (2), Lab (8)]

Students explore the adaptive reuse of an existing building (e.g. office space, retail or hospitality reuse) with emphasis on both historical preservation and sustainable and energy efficient solutions. Students complete an extensive program to identify the social, physical, and psychological needs of the occupants. Prior study regarding thermal systems, acoustics, indoor environmental quality, lighting, color, and building systems will be applied. Sustainability guidelines and code requirements will be analyzed and implemented.

The Winter 2023 term on January 9, 2023 - March 20, 2023, the Spring term on April 10, 2023-June 23.


Responsibilities: 

  • Prepare and deliver course content based on meeting course and program learning outcomes
  • Utilize the LMS provided by the school (Canvas) as platform to deliver information and assignments and collect students’ work
  • Assess student performance on papers/examinations/projects
  • Monitor student progress and provide student support in the form of feedback, coaching, and academic assistance
  • Foster student success by showing flexibility in style and delivery methods as well as exhibiting a passion for teaching and student interaction
  • Manage the learning environment through effective record keeping (i.e. Attendance reporting on a class by class basis, submitting grades and assessment reports on time, and enforcing NewSchool academic and attendance policies)
  • Communicate with academic leadership regarding student difficulties or issues that arise
  • Provide the necessary course documentation and archival for assessment review according to the adopted accreditation standards
  • Report student outcomes and use this information for teaching and learning improvements
  • Promote professionalism by modeling such behaviors inside and outside the classroom
  • Collaborate with necessary departments to support a positive team environment
  • Uphold NewSchool values, policies, and procedures

Other Duties & Responsibilities: May perform other duties and responsibilities that management may deem necessary from time to time. 

  • Any other assistance deemed necessary to promote the program or maintain its teaching delivery at the highest level of quality.


Education & Experience: 

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the field of study or closely related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Demonstrated record of high-quality instruction, as shown by a minimum of two years of undergraduate teaching experience or an extensive record of relevant professional expertise
  • Excellent communication (verbal/written) and organizational skills • Proficiency with Microsoft O365 Products
  • Preferred knowledge of Blackboard or Canvas

Working Conditions: 

Work is performed primarily in a standard office or classroom environment but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment and includes physical demands associated with a traditional office setting, e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions, as necessary.
