About the Machine Learning Engineer

You love building smart, scalable systems that convert streams of data into critical insights and actions. Sometimes this means wearing a data scientist hat, developing learning algorithms that power our customer portal and business decisioning systems, but most frequently it means donning a data engineer’s hat, building and scaling the applications that host these models in the cloud. You bring on-the-job experience with the technologies and architectures that make for fast and robust data pipelines, capable not only of structuring and transforming data but validating and alerting on it as well. You also bring experience with cloud-based distributed computing frameworks and are ready to lead the data science team’s efforts to scale up its entire portfolio of data-driven applications.

Beyond your technical interests, you have a passion for sustainability and are eager for your work to support the advancement of clean energy and enabling technologies, such as distributed energy resources and demand response. You want to become an expert in energy market operations, from load forecasting to management, but also in the digital experience of our customers, to ensure that they have an effortless and rewarding relationship with clean energy. Above all, you have strong communication skills, are able to engage effectively with non-technical stakeholders of your work, and are ready to learn from others and share your own expertise.

Responsibilities

Data engineering

  • Lead the design and development of our data pipeline, validating, transforming, structuring, and monitoring the data we ingest from internal sources and external vendors
  • Lead the design and development of our distributed computing architecture, ensuring the performant, scalable, and robust execution of all data science models
  • Work with Rhythm’s engineering team to automate the testing and production deployment of data science models
  • Be the data science team’s subject matter expert on the items above, sharing your expertise so that each member becomes an expert in our architecture and our workflows

Modeling

  • Contribute to our suite of customer-centric data science models, including customer valuation, churn propensity, segmentation, and next best action
  • Enable our supply team to deliver clean energy at lowest cost through energy demand, supply, and market price forecasting, and trading optimization tools
  • Lead the development of our core optimization framework, supporting internal services, our customer platform, and active management of customer distributed energy resources (DERs)—such as smart thermostats, batteries, and EV chargers—in our energy market operations

Business intelligence

  • Leverage our BI tools to support other teams: curating dashboards, designing visuals, and creating metrics that synthesize high-dimensional data
  • Enable automated, ML-informed decision-making within our marketing, pricing, and campaign management operations
  • Adopt a “so what” mindset, ensuring your work is always driven by business needs, priorities, and deadlines

Rhythm Citizen

  • Be an expert that teams across the business can rely on for our automated intelligence and machine learning capabilities
  • Make the data science team cross-functional by sharing your skills and learning others
  • Be a champion for Rhythm’s mission and values, both at work and in the community

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in CS or a quantitative field (Ph.D. preferred)
  • Solid understanding of graduate-level statistics, machine learning models and their tradeoffs, convex optimization, and numerical methods
  • 3+ years of industry experience in ML engineering, data science, or data engineering, preferably in digital retail, energy, or finance
  • Expertise with the python scientific stack, including numpy, pandas, matplotlib, sklearn, and tensorflow
