WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

The Assistant Managing Editor will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of the Editorial department, working closely with the Managing Editor of the Product Studio to ensure the timely and efficient production of content and to develop clear, effective strategies and processes that support department and companywide strategies and goals. This position requires strong leadership, personnel and content management skills, exceptional and efficient editing skills, strong organizational abilities, readiness to pitch new ideas, a willingness to test new workflows, and affinity for team collaboration. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver with a passion for storytelling and a commitment to maintaining the highest editorial standards across our MKT newsletters.

As part of the Editorial Management team, Assistant Managing Editors may regularly support backfill for Managing Editors who are out of office or on leave. Assistant Managing Editors also participate in the editorial management team’s on-call rotation.  

 

Assistant Managing Editors are standard bearers for 6AM’s editorial team — both as it relates to processes and workflows, and also company culture. They pride themselves on their ability to help others learn the ropes, are eager to develop new team members into high performers, and are able to identify high performing content for the team to quickly scale. 

Content Production and Workflow Management

  • Assist the Managing Editor of the Product Studio in overseeing production processes from conception to publication.

  • Manage and track the flow of content, ensuring all deadlines are met.

  • Coordinate with editors and other team members to ensure a smooth and collaborative workflow.

  • Help develop and maintain the editorial calendar, editorial toolbox, and support scheduling content and ensuring a consistent publishing schedule across MKTs

  • Willingness to test, use, and train editors on the adoption of AI tools and services

Editing and Quality Assurance

  • Copyedit and proofread newsletters and web content for relevance, tone, brand guidelines, grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, and accuracy.

  • Help ensure all content adheres to the company's style guide and quality standards.

  • Fact-check information to ensure accuracy and credibility.

  • Provide regular and constructive feedback to editors to help them improve their work.

  • Share best practices and identify areas for improvement.

Growth

  • Stay on top of analytics and KPIs. Track reader feedback, engagement, and subscriber data.

  • Produce and manage content that supports 6AM City’s subscriber acquisition, revenue goals, and other relevant KPIs. 

  • Produce and manage consistent and relevant content that improves subscriber retention and engagement rates.

Administrative Operations

  • Assist with content management system (CMS) support, including uploading and formatting content.

  • Actively evaluate new platforms and tech solutions to support editorial workflows and process — including automations, AI, and other tools and services

  • Support tracking for content performance using analytics tools

  • Contribute to reports for the editorial team.

  • Manage and respond to general editorial support needs.

  • Support after hours content management needs by participating in the editorial management’s on-call rotation.

Team

  • Help coordinate and lead team calls as assigned by the Managing Editor of the Product Studio.

  • Fill in for Managing Editors as assigned, including leading editorial meetings, providing feedback, and making content decisions. 

  • Operate as a stand-in Managing Editor during periods of absence.

  • Support the culture and synergy of 6AM City’s editorial team.

  • Demonstrate a solutions-oriented attitude.

  • Embrace the two-way coaching process. Demonstrate leadership in giving and receiving feedback.

Leadership and Strategy

  • Demonstrate an interest in, and knowledge of, industry trends.

  • Support Managing Editors with team execution of company-wide editorial strategies and initiatives. 

  • Serve as an expert in the creation of engaging, shareable content.

  • Serve as a liaison advocating on behalf of editorial team members.

  • Work closely with Managing Editors, the Senior Editorial Director, and VP of Content to continually grow and develop the role.

We are looking for team members with a strong and diverse knowledge of content relevant to growing communities, established community, and editorial relationships and a track record of success in digital media.

 

  • Experience. 5+ years of editorial experience, or experience in a similar field (marketing, corporate communications, etc.); some prior management experience is preferred.

  • Leadership. Act as a proactive solutions-finder.

  • Interest. In escaping traditional media models, with a desire to explore new story formats and create incredible short-form content with a talented team of content creators, managers, and leadership alongside you. 

  • Collaboration. With curiosity, enthusiasm, and readiness to learn from others who may have more or less experience than you in certain areas.

  • Ownership. In being driven, confident, adaptable, passionate, and spirited, with awareness of your brand, brand position, and brand voice.

  • Innovation. Willing to seek out new ways to think, filter, and be creative in content production and packaging; lead the charge, report results, and do it all over again. 

  • Knowledge. Of who your audience is, what they want to hear, where they’ll be seeking the information, why they’ll want to engage, when to tell them the story, and how to follow-up.

  • Willingness. To learn new tech — we’ll help you develop a solid understanding of email campaign management, data, analytics, AI, and CMS. Prior experience would be a plus. 

  • Team Player. Curious individual who portrays enthusiasm while learning and working with others.

Skills needed for this role include:

  • Impeccable copyediting and proofreading skills with a strong command of the English language

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Proficiency with content management systems

  • Familiarity with AP Style or other major style guides.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • A keen eye for detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.

  • Familiarity with SEO best practices and digital content strategy is a plus.
