WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

The role of Managing Editor supports the strategic growth and development of 6AM City’s editorial team, specifically as it relates to content management, creation, and strategy. 

 

The Managing Editor reports directly to the VP, Editorial and provides leadership and hands-on coaching to a segment of the editorial team. This role works under the direction of the VP, Editorial to ensure the quality of all content being published in 6AM markets by coaching on content development, providing editorial guidance, reporting on performance metrics, encouraging professional development, enforcing content expectations and deadlines, managing special projects, and delivering exemplary content examples for 6AM City’s market newsletters, websites, and social media. This role directly manages City Editors in assigned markets, identifying high performers for growth opportunities and working to coach individual performance when opportunities for improvement are identified. This role provides regular and consistent recommendations relating to individual performance to the VP of Editorial, and leads performance reviews for direct reports.

 

The Managing Editor eats, breathes, and dreams about content. They are an expert on 6AM City’s style, voice, tone, brand, and coverage guidelines. They are experts in what we cover, how we cover it, and how we differentiate our local news product in the market to drive engagement. They provide daily feedback and guidance to ensure editorial consistency across teams. An exceptional content creator, the Managing Editor proposes and implements strategies for leveraging content engagement and furthering 6AM City as a participatory media brand.

 

The success of this role is largely measured by the aggregate strength of the content produced by the Managing Editor’s local market teams (particularly as it relates to creativity, engagement, brand guidelines, cleanliness, accuracy, etc.).

 

Content Management

  • Provide a daily edit of all markets’ newsletters and social assets to support the delivery of an impeccably clean, error-free, and on-brand product.

  • Serve as the initial point of contact pre-publishing for all content-related questions, issues, and concerns for the editorial team.

  • Directly manage City Editors in all assigned markets. Provide timely performance reviews and, as necessary, performance improvement plans.

  • Maintain, regulate, and enforce 6AM’s brand and style guidelines. Ensure a high level of consistency across our rapidly growing markets.

  • Lead editorial team members in the creation of a monthly content calendar.

  • Provide regular and consistent feedback on content. Share best practices and identify areas for improvement.

  • Support the creation, development, and deployment of scalable, multi-market content and initiatives, and enforce the execution and meeting of deadlines for all company-wide content initiatives.

  • Lead the creation, development, and deployment of editorial resources such as content templates, content approach guidelines, and master content pieces.

  • Maintain and create content guidelines and strategies as needed.

  • Support the creation, development, and deployment of new editorial projects (e.g. new newsletters in existing markets).

  • Collaborate with the National Content Team to provide hands-on day-to-day editorial support during periods of transition (leave, time off, termination, onboarding, etc.).

 

Leadership and Strategy

  • Demonstrate an interest in, and knowledge of, industry trends.

  • Be willing to experiment, test the boundaries, and leverage creativity in content and content creation.

  • Work with the Editorial Director to create and deploy company-wide editorial strategies.

  • Serve as an expert in the creation of engaging, shareable content.

  • Make recommendations on behalf of the editorial team as it relates to content strategy and needs.

  • Serve as a liaison advocating on behalf of editorial team members.

  • Work closely with other Managing Editors, the Editorial Director, VP of Content, and 6AM’s People Operations Manager to continually grow and develop the role.

  • Participate in and support editorial talent acquisition to create a diverse editorial staff across assigned markets.

 

Growth

  • Track reader feedback, engagement, and subscriber data.

  • Stay on top of analytics and KPIs. Identify trends and make recommendations to the Editorial Director based on data.

  • Produce and manage content that supports 6AM City’s subscriber acquisition, revenue goals, and other relevant KPIs. 

  • Produce and manage consistent and relevant content that improves subscriber retention and engagement rates.

 

Team

  • Assist with the training and onboarding of new editorial team members.

  • Work with the Editorial Director to define clear and measurable success metrics for the editorial team.

  • Support the culture and synergy of 6AM City’s editorial team.

  • Demonstrate a solutions-oriented attitude.

  • Embrace the two-way coaching process. Demonstrate leadership in giving and receiving feedback.

We are looking for team members with a strong and diverse knowledge of content relevant to growing communities, established community, and editorial relationships and a track record of success in digital media.

 

  • Editorial Experience. 5+ years of editorial experience; some management experience preferred.

  • Interest. In escaping traditional media models, with a desire to explore new story formats and create incredible short-form content with a talented team of content creators, managers, and leadership alongside you. 

  • Personal Brand. Driven, confident, adaptable, passionate, and spirited. Ownership of your brand, your opinion, and your voice.

  • Know How to Innovate. Seek out new ways to think, filter, and be creative; lead the charge, report results, and do it all over again. 

  • Be in the Know. Know who your audience is, what they want to hear, where they’ll be seeking the information, why they’ll want to engage and when to tell them the story.

  • Willingness to Learn New Tech. A solid understanding of social media, email campaigns, data, analytics, CMS experience, and social media management would be a plus. Show us what we’re missing!
