The Public Good Projects (PGP) is seeking a Writer, Misinformation and Global Health to join our organization’s growing editorial team.
This position will report on trending vaccine misinformation for a high profile global public health program. Our mission is to equip countries with social listening programs in order to increase vaccine demand and reduce the impact of misinformation. Using media monitoring insights from our research department, the candidate will summarize these conversations in English in various ways, including weekly misinformation alerts crafted for audiences in countries across the world. Topics will include COVID-19 vaccines as well as other routine immunizations like polio. The ideal candidate for this position will have 1-2 years of experience writing about misinformation or/or health-related topics for a digital publication and should be a confident fact checker. We are looking for someone who is passionate about health, able to succinctly summarize large amounts of media monitoring data into easily digestible and interesting insights, and able to work independently and quickly on tight timelines.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Specific duties include, but may not be limited to:
Fact checking misinformation.
Monitoring fact checking news sites around the world and incorporating those relevant fact checks into our own reporting.
Synthesizing data from our research team to create interesting and impactful misinformation alerts.
Writing weekly briefs in English on a variety of topics, predominantly around misinformation and immunizations, which can be quickly understood and utilized by various audiences, including government officials and the general public.
Uploading misinformation alerts into a central website and working to maintain a comprehensive and organized tagging system for our reporting.
Contributing to other editorial projects on an as-needed basis, including identifying how media monitoring insights could be used as sources for fresh reporting.
Collaborating with PGP’s public health research team and editorial team to publish those stories in various formats (e.g., weekly newsletters and briefs, news alerts, or social media posts).
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
1-2 years of journalism and reporting experience. Fact checking or experience monitoring misinformation is strongly preferred.
An understanding of how to write about health and/or misinformation for a broad audience, and the flexibility to cover a wide range of health topics.
The ability to work efficiently in a quick-turnaround environment without sacrificing accuracy and attention to detail.
Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
Proven ability to report and write accurately in a fast-paced, deadline-driven news environment.
Ability to communicate regularly on Slack and in video conferences with a distributed team that works remotely across many time zones.
