THIS IS A REMOTE POSITION
PGP (The Public Good Projects) is seeking a new, full-time role: a Health and Science Reporter who will report to the Senior Editor. The Health and Science Reporter is responsible for pitching, reporting, and writing content across multiple platforms, including newsletters and reported articles of various lengths.
You’re an ideal candidate for this position if you have a few years of journalism experience under your belt. You love taking fact-checked, well-researched data and research findings about public health topics and making them accessible to a mainstream audience. You have an instinct for compelling stories and are comfortable picking up the phone and interviewing anyone, including scientists and public health subject-matter experts. You know what resonates with readers and the best way to explain it.
We’re looking for someone with sharp critical thinking skills and a flexible attitude, someone who can run with an idea and pivot when needed. You may write newsletter copy about vaccines one day, and pitch ideas around mental health, addiction, or other public health topics the next. You’re comfortable writing headlines and creating social media and newsletter copy when needed.
Many of these stories will live on a new nonprofit news site PGP is developing focused on public health. As the first full-time reporter for the site, you will play a crucial role in figuring out our primary beats and story formats.
This is a full-time, fully remote position that is eligible for benefits. Candidates must have the ability to work from their own home office.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Specific duties include, but may not be limited to:
Research, pitch, report, and write original, engaging articles on topics related to public health
Develop sources on key public health beats
Assist in ideating, writing, and managing other types of content, including social copy and newsletters
Fact checking
Participate in pitch meetings
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Minimum two years reporting and writing experience
Proven history of writing about complex scientific or public health topics for a general audience, digital publishing preferred
Excellent writing, proofreading, and communication skills
Collaborative and interpersonal skills and the ability to work on tight deadlines, independently, in a remote team environment
Bilingual in English/Spanish strongly preferred
Familiarity with AP Style and SEO best practices a plus
