Virscio is recruiting a board-certified veterinary pathologist to provide support for nonhuman primate studies associated with translational research contracts and collaborations, as well as internal research and development. The position requires broad experience with veterinary pathology, proficiency in qualitative and quantitative pathology evaluations, data capture, and authoring of comprehensive reports. In addition to a strong knowledge base, the successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, and enjoy working with scientists with expertise in a range of complex conditions, including many ocular and neurologic diseases. Experience with IHC/IF assay development and optimization, and familiarity with computer-assisted quantitative image analysis techniques are also desirable.
Responsibilities
· Work closely with the Pathology Director, Histology Director, Study Directors, and facility veterinarians to maintain and advance the facility veterinary program, and health and welfare of the facility colony through oversight of diagnostic pathology cases, including histopathologic analysis and correlation with clinical and gross necropsy findings.
· Work closely with the Histology Director, image analysis scientists, and Study Directors to conduct microscopic evaluation of tissues from GLP and non-GLP studies using routine H&E and special stains, as well as molecular methods to detect proteins and nucleic acids (IHC, IF, ISH, etc.), including multiplexing, with qualitative, semi-quantitative, fully quantitative, and photomicrographic data capture.
· Interpret the gross and histomolecular pathology findings in context of the clinical observations, in vivo imaging, and clinical pathology data to generate comprehensive reports for Sponsors, collaborators, and internal model development initiatives.
· Engage with regulatory counterparts to apply best diagnostic and preclinical research practices.
· Advance the clinical and histopathology programs through contribution and updating of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
· Review the design study protocols and sample methods to ensure execution plans are aligned with research objectives and best practices.
· Conduct analyses and reporting in accordance with good laboratory practices (GLPs) aligning with study and reporting needs.
· Contribution to maintenance of facility GLPs and AAALAC credentials.
· On-site and off-site client, auditor, and vendor interactions.
· Author and contribute to scientific manuscripts and meeting presentations.
· Present company capabilities at relevant scientific meetings.
Education/Experience Requirements
· Requires DVM degree, or equivalent, preferably with a PhD in a relevant field (molecular biology, pharmacology, toxicology, etc.)
· ACVP board-certified, preferably with 3 or more years of veterinary pathology experience in academic or industry settings work in GLP settings to support IND-enabling studies
· Laboratory experience working with in vivo models, is also desired, preferably including primate translational models

· Demonstrated ability to adapt to the unique challenges of a fast-paced research environment
· Experience working in a GLP environment and contributing to SOP maintenance
· Must have communication and presentation skills and comfort interacting with Study Directors, Sponsors, and veterinary and scientific consultants
· Candidates with veterinary pathology experience in two or more of the following areas preferred: nonhuman primates, ophthalmology, immunology, neuropathology
