VP of People & Culture

Texas Freedom Network  (a 501c4 non-profit) along with our affiliated partner Texas Freedom Network Education Fund (a 501c3 non-profit) is a grassroots organization of community leaders and young Texans building an informed and effective movement for equality and social justice (tfn.org). TFN was established in 1995 and has grown to a 35+ full-time team along with dozens of part-time staff across the State. 

The new VP of People & Culture (VPPC) will serve a key role in the health and well-being of the organization. A successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of developing and implementing people-centered systems and equitable practices at the organizational level. They are a skilled manager and experienced HR/People leader with adept problem-solving skills that display their emotional intelligence. As a member of the leadership team, the VP of People & Culture will cultivate an equitable and inclusive organizational culture and people-centered practices to ensure a healthy and sustainable organization.

Salary

TFN/TFNEF  uses standardized salary bands to ensure pay equity. At the VP level, the salary is $105,000 to $125,000 depending on experience. We are open to considering exceptional candidates at the Sr. Vice President level and salary. We also offer considerable benefits summarized at the end of the job description.

Areas of Responsibility

HR, Organizational Risk Management, and all People-related Oversight (~60%): 

To ensure that TFN recruits, develops, supports, and retains a diverse team to meet our organization’s goals, the VP of People and Culture will:

  • Serve as staff ombuds and provide support and guidance to resolve high-level HR-related issues in a manner that builds trust among staff

  • Ensure successful implementation and execution of HR/People/Organizational Management goals, strategies, and work plans. These include but are not limited to: 

    • HR and people-related matters, such as compliance with equitable policies and practices that are consistent across the organization

    • HR policies and procedures - including employee benefits, payroll, staff onboarding, professional development, and performance evaluations

    • Performance evaluations and other staff development and feedback practices

    • TFN’s compensation/total rewards package to ensure equitably and boost team morale (in collaboration with VP of Finance & Ops)

    • Organizational risk management and liability, working in close partnership with other key leaders and HR manager

  • Lead our organizational talent management strategy in collaboration with the HR Manager to ensure we have a successful talent pipeline and new staff onboarding process. 

    • This includes staff training and development, including building racial equity skills and competencies


Org Culture, Equity, and Cohesion (~35%):

The VP of People and Culture will serve on the leadership team and help inform organizational direction and decision-making. Driving TFN-wide efforts to strengthen organizational culture, cohesion, and equity, the VPPC will:

  • Developing annual goals and plans to create a welcoming, inclusive, and empowering organizational culture rooted in authenticity and anti-oppression

  • Own ongoing tracking and assessment of progress to organizational culture  goals, analysis and troubleshooting, and processes for ongoing systemic learning and continuous improvement 

  • Lead the process of developing longer-term strategic plans around organizational culture and/or answering longer-term strategic culture questions (in partnership with the President)

  • Oversee efforts to make TFN more diverse, inclusive, and equitable, which includes identifying and calling out tenets of white supremacy that show up in non-profit advocacy spaces by

    • Proposing and informing leadership on needed shifts in organizational policies, practices, and mindsets/skills

    • Leading and supporting the work of our internal DEI Committee

    • Leading the process to retain a DEI consultant and owning the ongoing relationship with TFN

  • Occasionally own special projects or initiatives outside the scope of TFN’s existing departments as assigned by President


Board Liaison (~5%)

To support the work of the Board of Directors, the VPPC will

  • Drive strategic coordination of the Board, managing up to and keeping President engaged where appropriate

  • Take lead on the scheduling of board communications and meetings as well as development of agendas and materials for board meetings

  • Help to coordinate the business conducted by the Board’s committees 


Key Requirements

  • We wish to take into account a variety of personal and professional experiences. However, a successful candidate will be able to demonstrate past experience in the majority of areas of responsibility outlined above. Please review them for job requirements.

  • 7+ years management experience and has served as HR/People Director or in a significant role where they have had decision-making authority around HR/People policies and practices

  • Experience navigating tricky personnel issues and driving HR/People strategy

  • Experience crafting and/or implementing an equitable pay/compensation program a plus


Other Role Details

  • Location: Austin, TX

TFN & TFN Education fund staff are distributed across the state, but the executive leadership team must be located in the Austin area. We are able to be flexible with relocation timelines.

  • Ideal start: April - May 2023 

This will allow for a transition period with the current COO

  • Office type: Hybrid

TFN allows for a great deal of flexibility in working hours. Staff may attend events or team meetings either at the TFN office, community events, etc. Some travel in the state and across the country may be needed - less than 10% time
