Texas Freedom Network is a statewide non-partisan, grassroots organization that is building an informed and effective movement working toward equality and social justice.


Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Coordinator is responsible for protecting the organization’s voice across all Texas Freedom Network written copy, and promoting the TFN brand to broaden audience awareness among key constituencies. This role requires collaboration across the organization, working with members of the Political, Organizing, Texas Rising, Digital, and Development Departments. 

The Communications Coordinator drafts communication materials for different audiences - including the organization’s supporters, members of the press, donors, and elected officials - and acts as guardian of the TFN brand, bringing the impactful work of staff to the public at large in an understandable and compelling manner. This role collaborates with every member of the Communications Department, to implement strategy and cultivate idea generation to move individuals to take action on behalf of TFN and its projects, elevating the brand of the organization. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Use strategic communications skills to amplify, promote, and publicize the efforts/work of Texas Freedom Network and its projects: Texas Rising and Just Texas.

  • Use the Communications Department’s strategic communications process to manage requests from program staff for communications support.

  • Contribute to refining and updating the Communications Department guiding processes and protocols about best practices in strategic communications.

  • Act as a copy editor for TFN, protecting the organization’s identity and voice. 

  • Other communications projects as assigned by the Communications Director.

  • Produce content: craft strategic messaging, op-eds, press releases, letters to the editor, statements, internal memoranda, briefings, message guidance, fact sheets, and other materials.

    • Write and edit blog posts for the TFN website, including ghostwriting for program staff.

    • Ghostwrite and edit Op-Eds.

    • Participate in email action strategy.

    • Assist in drafting messaging frames and crafting talking points to be used in press releases, media interviews, blog posts, social media, and email action alerts.

  • Collaborate and coordinate with members across the organization, including political, organizing, Texas Rising, digital, and development.

    • Monitor social media to identify trends and social media messaging opportunities.

    • Act as a spokesperson - for print, broadcast, and radio - when necessary.

Desired qualifications are described below. Consideration will be given to individuals who may not meet the listed qualifications but demonstrate strong skills, knowledge, and potential.

  • Ideal candidates will have at least 1-2  years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas: media, creative writing, strategic communications, digital communications, or public relations.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the progressive values, mission and goals of the organization, including experience working with communities of color and a desire to be part of an anti-racist organization.

  • Must possess strong organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and possess the ability to follow projects through to completion.

  • Ability to communicate persuasively and clearly in writing and verbally to a wide variety of media, political, stakeholder, influencer, and volunteer audiences.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others as part of a team.

  • Proficiency in Google Docs.

  • Must live in Texas, with the ability to travel throughout the state as needed.

    Preferred, but not required:

  • Experience working with the news media and journalists.

  • Familiarity with the Associated Press style.

  • Familiarity with the Texas political landscape, the Texas Legislature, and the function of the State Board of Education are a plus.

  • Fluency in another language is highly valued, but not required.


Pay & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $45,000-$52,000

  • TFN pays 100% of employee premium costs for certain insurance plans covering medical, dental, and vision care.

  • TFN makes an annual employer contribution from 3 - 6% of employee’s salary (depending on tenure).

  • Paid holidays, including time off between Christmas and New Years fully paid.

  • Paid vacation, personal, sick, and parental leave.

  • Paid 4-week sabbatical after completing seven years of service.
