The Texas Freedom Network (TFN) seeks a full-time Media & Communications Coordinator based in Austin, Texas. TFN is a statewide non-partisan, grassroots organization that is building an informed and effective movement working toward equality and social justice.

The Media & Communications Coordinator will oversee media relations and content development for TFN’s advocacy campaigns. The primary responsibilities of the Media & Communications Coordinator will be to respond to day-to-day media inquiries, coordinate press outreach, and draft communications materials to support cross-departmental initiatives. The Media & Communications Coordinator should be passionate about progressive advocacy, storytelling that drives social change, and building relationships with journalists and TFN’s members. The Media & Communications Coordinator will report to the Sr. Communications Director.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Media Relations Coordination and Content Creation

    • Help build and maintain relationships with key reporters

    • Draft and edit press releases, letters to the editor, statements, fact sheets, blog posts, and other communications materials

    • Monitor and track media campaign performance using media tracking tools

    • Act as a TFN spokesperson

    • Assist in media and comms training

    • Support the development of media plans for advocacy campaigns

    • Provide logistical support and technical assistance at press conferences and other events

    • Maintain an editorial calendar for strategic proactive media pitches

    • Respond to incoming press requests and coordinate with appropriate spokespersons

    • Track media engagements and maintain records for metrics reporting

    • Coordinate with members of the Political, Organizing, Digital, Development Departments for possible communications needs

    • Assist in drafting messaging frames and talking points 

    • Provide copy editing support

    • Help research messaging approaches for varying audiences

    • Assist in policy and research communications needs

    • Assist in executive communications strategies for departments and programs

    • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience and/or training in journalism, public relations, non-profit communications, or related fields.

  • Commitment to the mission and principles of TFN

  • Demonstrated experience drafting press releases, statements, and other communications materials

  • Experience working with media contacts and pitching stories to journalists

  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines

  • Strong written and verbal communication, research, and interpersonal skills

preferred but not required:

  • Experience in nonprofit, advocacy, or political communications

  • Knowledge of the Texas Legislature

  • Knowledge of AP style

  • Proficiency in oral and written Spanish

 

Benefits

Salary: $50,000 - $65,000 (depending on experience)
