ABOUT THE CAYTON CHILDREN'S MUSEUM

The first museum of its kind in Los Angeles, the Cayton Children’s Museum taps into the power of the arts and play to nurture core universal values in the next generation, spark human connection and ignite social change for a better, kinder and more just world. With 21,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits, art studios, a theatre, rotating art gallery, multipurpose rooms, and a robust calendar of arts and cultural programming, the Cayton sends young visitors on an adventure of self-exploration, giving them the tools to find their purpose, perspective and potential. The Cayton is the next evolution of the former Zimmer Children’s Museum, which closed its doors in 2019 after 30 years of serving the local community to prepare for the opening of the Cayton. With more space, visibility and accessibility, the Cayton continues the Zimmer’s long-standing commitment to inclusiveness and social equity through free admission initiatives for families on public assistance, subsidized field trips for Title 1 schools, class and camp scholarships, and special needs programming designed to enhance the lives of children with disabilities.

While the Museum strives to increase access within its walls, youTHink was created in 1992 to expand arts exposure beyond them. youTHink is an integrated arts initiative that enables middle and high school students from more than 40 Title 1 schools – schools that traditionally lack funding for the arts – to engage in social justice issues through creative expression. The program is designed to give youth a sense of agency and advocacy through in-school artist residencies, neighborhood programs and student ambassadorships that invite them to explore contemporary social issues such as community, identity, adversity and civic responsibility. By encouraging participants to navigate these themes through theatre, photography, creative writing, urban planning and creative movement, students work past barriers to address trauma, build resiliency and find purpose.
