JOB SUMMARY 

The Cayton Children's Museum is seeking an experienced Marketing Director to oversee the organization’s annual marketing, advertising, and communications strategy with the purpose of building brand awareness, creating a definitive and cohesive brand identity, promoting programs and offerings, increasing museum foot traffic and program enrollment, and driving both contributed and earned revenue. The Marketing Director will demonstrate an ability to build and rollout an effective and measurable strategy that is driven by organizational goals, with close attention to detail, accuracy, and deadlines. The position directly supervises the Communications & Marketing Coordinator, Creative Lead, and Copywriter & Editor.   

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Develops the museum’s annual marketing plan, communications and content calendar, and advertising strategy around organizational goals and oversees the department in the implementation 

  • Sets clearly defined, measurable goals that aim to grow and engage our visitor ship and constituent base and leads the department in meeting benchmarks 

  • Identifies creative, resourceful, and effective approaches to marketing programs and organizational initiatives that ensure best use of limited budgetary resources.  

  • Ensures all messaging, positioning, and creative is aligned and consistent with the brand personality, voice, and tone to build a strong and unique brand identity.  

  • Uses analytics and insights on audience behaviors, as well as a strong knowledge of market trends and methodologies, to identify the most effective platforms and advertising channels to reach target audiences 

  • Manages all external PR/marketing consultants and agencies, setting expectations, monitoring progress, and equipping them with the tools and resources needed to achieve success. This includes oversight of the implementation of organization’s Google for Nonprofits SEO grant 

  • Manages and grows the Cayton Luminary program, a network of influencer ambassadors that support Museum efforts.  

  • Works with the Chief Advancement Officer to develop the annual marketing and advertising budget and closely monitors actual expenses against budgeted throughout the year to ensure fiduciary responsibility.  

  • Distills the brand identity into a style guide that aims to create consistency, clarity, and a strong value proposition across all marketing, promotions, and communications. This includes directing the staff in implementing the style guide to ensuring accurate and appropriate usage of logos, marks, colors, imagery, positioning, beliefs, voice and tone.  

  • Directs the Creative Lead in the design and timely delivery of all marketing collateral and brand assets 

  • Develops an effective system for submitting creative requests and work orders to design, with close consideration to deadlines and lead times, copy edits and sign-off, and hand-off of approved materials to relevant departments 

  • Manages the Communications & Marketing Coordinator on all ongoing marketing and promotional initiatives, including the newsletter, social media, community outreach, photo archival, and the timely update and management of the website with content and program updates.  

  • Manages the Copyeditor and Writer in the review of all major internal and public-facing materials and communications prior to distribution, with close attention to grammar, style, spelling, consistency, and content accuracy. Acts as final editor and gatekeeper prior to dissemination.  

  • Spearheads the Board of Directors Marketing Committee and regularly reports to the Board on overall progress in quarterly meetings and via monthly updates. 

  • Manages outside photographers and videographers to support marketing and campaign initiatives. 

  • Additional duties as needed.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND CAPABILITIES  

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  

  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in marketing, communications, or related fieldPrevious experience working in nonprofit and/or with children's brands preferred. 

  • Deep knowledge of the digital and social media landscape, industry practices, and best platforms/tools for reaching desired audiences and creating engagement.  

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe, and other standard office software, systems, and collaboration tools.  

  • Experience managing and maximizing Google AdWords, a plus.  

  • Proven ability to build and direct strategy, manage execution, and lead team(s) toward desired outcomes. 

  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills that demonstrate institutional knowledge, confidence, and integrity.  

  • Excellent organization and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, while paying close attention to detail and accuracy.  

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions informed by quantitative and qualitative data and insights.  

  • A positive, can-do attitude with strong self-direction and a desire to take initiative.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

The person in this position must be able to: 

  • Move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, storage shelves, etc. 

  • Lift up to 20 lbs.  

  • Communicate via telephone, video conference, email, and in-person. 

  • Move about for sustained periods of time during special events and media visits to the museum. 

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS 

  • Annual salary of $72,000-$80,000 depending on experience.

SCHEDULE 

The Marketing Director is a full-time, exempt position with occasional evenings and weekends work, as needed. Because the Cayton is an in-person operation, our employees are expected to work in-office, unless otherwise instructed.
