Technical Writer

Locations: Austin, TX, Chantilly, VA and Sarasota, FL

As a Technical Writer and S1000D architect you will produce and develop a high quality a configurable, patchable, modular, and intuitive, interactive, and searchable Level-5 Operations and Maintenance Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM) using S1000D XML formatting standards and IAW MIL-STD-3048B. This Level-5 IETM will contain information to assist maintenance technicians by providing thorough, step-by-step equipment troubleshooting and repair processes with links to technical drawings, parts lists, and maintenance training materials embedded into IETMs so that maintenance technicians can easily access maintenance aids during maintenance processes. The IETM will also drive automated maintenance actions in the product we are building. You will work closely and collaboratively with the project manager, SMEs, hardware and software engineers, analysts, and training personnel to compose technical information into a clear and readable document for the end user. Ideal candidate should also be able to create a variety of technical documents including requirements and design documents, technical diagrams and technical presentations.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop Level 5 Interactive IETM that comply with S1000D XML formatting standards.
  • Create, manage, and maintain S1000D data modules, to include XML authoring, tagging, and revision control.
  • Collaborate with technical writers and subject matter experts to create S1000D-compliant technical documentation, including manuals, user guides, and maintenance instructions.
  • Ensure the accuracy and consistency of S1000D data modules and associated documentation, performing regular quality checks and audits.
  • Act as a SME on S1000D compliance and MIL-STD-3048B and assist with training other team members on the applicability of these standards to our project.
  • Ensures customer requirements are delivered on a very tight development timeline.
  • Leads the preparation of customer delivery documents, packages, and software.
  • Oversee the entire documentation lifecycle, from creation and revision to publication and retirement, while ensuring compliance with S1000D standards.
Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with engineering design and management software. Experience interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Thorough understanding of XML and structured authoring principles.
  • Proficiency in developing and maintaining stylesheets using XSLT.
  • Experience working with S1000D standards, including conversion, authoring, and adherence to specifications. Must have a very strong/expert proficiency with S1000D concepts such as information codes, SNS, Data Modules metadata and applicability.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex content conversion challenges.
  • Strong communications skills. Will be required to communicate with parties within and outside of own job function. May have responsibility for communicating with parties external to the organization (e.g., customers, vendors, etc.)
  • Must have proficiency with software for creating technical documentation. Examples include Contenta Publishing Suite, Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe FrameMaker Publishing Server, and Adobe RoboHelp.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and consistently meet deadlines.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of directly related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with SIGINT systems.
  • Active TS/SCI
  • A working knowledge of Adobe products such as PhotoShop, After Effects, Premier Pro, and Audition.
  • Familiarity with HTML, JavaScript, Webserver development, Moodle and h5p a plus.
