ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

Liberation in a Generation (LibGen) is a movement support organization dedicated to advancing the economic liberation of people of color within one generation. Formed in 2019, LibGen is dedicated to building the power of people of color to totally transform the economy—who controls it, how it works, and most importantly, for whom. We bring together advocates, community organizers, economists, and other proven and emerging leaders of color across the country to build a Liberation Economy, within one generation.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Dismantling our current Oppression Economy and building a Liberation Economy requires building a compelling worldview that explains present realities and engages audiences in stretching imaginations toward a future vision. The Director will continue building a worldview that succinctly and directly engages leaders of color in uprooting current assumptions, limiting beliefs and oppressive values and replaces them with compelling, irresistible narratives, stories to shape strategies, policies and what is possible.The Director of Storytelling and Narrative Change will continue developing, visualizing and narrating the LibGen worldview as well as develop strategies for sharing, and amplifying a worldview that partners want to adopt and co-create.

The Director will lead the creation of content aimed at amplifying LibGen’s economic worldview and policy positions to our core audiences (i.e. grassroots organizers, national and grassroots  movement partners, funders, and policymakers). Additionally, the Director will be responsible for managing the platforms used to amplify LibGen’s policy and narrative content, such as LibGen’s social media, newsletter, website, and others. 

The Director will also provide direct storytelling and narrative support to our grassroots and movement partners. Finally, to a limited extent, the Director will manage LibGen’s interaction with the media. The Director will co-supervise two staff in coordination with the Director of Learning and Experience as part of the Creative Group.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the creation of storytelling and narrative materials that will amplify LibGen’s economic worldview and policy positions with its core audiences (i.e. grassroots leaders, movement leaders, funders, and policy makers). 
  • Develop and implement a strategy for partners to adopt an economic worldview that empowers organizers and movement leaders to challenge and replace the assumptions, beliefs, and values of the Oppression Economy and that illustrates, inspires, and advances a Liberation Economy.
  • Lead the direction and management of a variety of mediums to amplify LibGen’s, and its partners, storytelling and narrative content (i.e. written materials, infographics, video, audio, etc.). 
  • Lead the development and implementation of practices that will measure the resonance of narratives designed to advance LibGen’s economic worldview. 
  • Lead the production of LibGen’s newsletter and its podcast, Racism is Profitable. 
  • Co-supervise the day-to-today work of staff in the creative group. 
  • Work with the Chief Program Officer to set goals, identify staff development opportunities, and assess staff performance. 
  • Steward a culture that is aligned with LibGen’s stated values
  • Support co-EDs on select projects and other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to racial and economic justice with an approach that aligns with the values of Liberation in a Generation. LibGen is looking for someone who can work with radical pragmatism and flexibility while holding the mission of the organization as a guiding principle of their work. The candidate will have experience with creating content to amplify narratives aligned with racial and economic justice. Must thrive in a collaborative environment in which success depends on the collective efforts of a group. 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

Required

  • At least 5-7 years of experience in the fields of racial and economic justice, and in creating and amplifying progressive economic narratives using various mediums and platforms.
  • Must possess a strong creative practice; steeped in storytelling and worldview building. 
  • Strong writer able to develop emotionally and intellectually engaging content for varied audiences.
  • A demonstrated understanding of how worldview is shaped and how to influence and shift worldview.
  • Experienced project manager with a proven track record of leading project teams, using a variety of tools and strategies to stay on track and keep lines of communication open across teams.  
  • Experienced supervisor with strong management practices who inspires and motivates others to meet goals, leading them toward success and growth. 
  • Ability to function and collaborate effectively with other senior level staff, and to work with their peers to deliver projects that advance LibGen’s organizational vision, mission and theory of change.  
  • Ability to take criticism and direction and to use an iterative approach.

TRAVEL: This position requires up to 25% domestic travel. 

SALARY AND BENEFITS: 

Salary range of $137,000 to $158,000 annually commensurate with experience. LibGen offers an excellent benefits package that includes generous paid time off, three respite weeks off throughout the year, a 3% employer contribution to retirement account, and 100% employer paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for you and your dependents.
