Midwest Access Coalition (MAC) Client Coordinator
Full-Time Paid Position – 40 Hours/Week 

MAC seeks highly motivated, organized and detail-oriented people to serve as Client Coordinators to support the fast growing need for practical support in a post-Roe United States.

 

ABOUT US

Midwest Access Coalition (IL 501c3) is a regional practical support organization (PSO) that assists low-income individuals with the funding and support needed to surpass barriers to accessing abortion at any gestation. For those who are traveling to, from or within the Midwest to access safe abortion services, MAC plans and funds bus/train/plane travel, gas reimbursements, rideshares, volunteer drivers and hosts, hotel accommodations, food, and childcare. We envision a world where abortion is completely accessible to all financially, geographically, and emotionally.

Since 2015, MAC has assisted over 3,000 individuals and families from 30 states going to over 70 clinics throughout the country. We prioritize centering the client experience and work hard to develop relationships with abortion funds, other PSOs, and clinics to ensure the quality of the abortion access journey is high no matter where one lives.

Client Coordinators report to a Director of Client Services and will be part of a remote-based team that works collaboratively to case manage directly with clients, abortion funds, other PSOs, and abortion providers.

This can be a demanding and stressful job, but it is also extremely fulfilling. Coordinators are the first and often only supportive contact for abortion seekers. Our new coordinator hires will join an existing team of coordinators, and will have their support and guidance, in addition to that of the Director(s) of Client Services. 

Client coordination is the most client-facing work within our organization. Coordinators perform a variety of duties including the oversight and management of our hotline, documenting client intakes, logistical strategizing, booking of travel arrangements, utilizing MAC volunteers (drivers, hosts and pilots), and interfacing with clinics as well as other abortion funds and practical support organizations. 

Duties include:

  1. Treating clients with respect and autonomy while meeting their communication needs, i.e. translation services, privacy or safety concerns, disability and/or accessibility needs, etc. Client communication happens primarily over text, but through email and phone calls as well.

  2. Supporting clients from start to finish - from them contacting the hotline, to receiving medical care, to their return home - doing one’s best to serve their practical support needs in a holistic way

  3. Contacting volunteer hosts and drivers, and connecting clients to these volunteers as needed

  4. Booking plane, train, and bus tickets, scheduling rideshare pickups and drop offs, and coordinating the proper accommodations for clients based on our existing hotel partnerships and within budgetary guidelines  

  5. Regularly communicating with the client coordination team and other MAC staff, clinic partners, abortion funds, and PSOs

  6. Troubleshooting complex situations to ensure that client needs are met and that MAC boundaries are maintained. Work with fellow coordinators for assistance/input when needed.

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Talk with vetted members of the press seeking additional information on MAC and the reproductive rights landscape 

  2. Speak at events representing MAC, to cultivate a knowledge of abortion access and reproductive justice in the greater community

  3. Assist with new client-facing volunteer orientations to ensure that they understand the work MAC does

  4. Minimal travel, but planned yearly staff retreats and other conferences that may require staff presence

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  1. Remote full-time employment, with need for a flexible environment to allow timely and confidential response to be able to serve MAC clients’ and abortion providers’ needs

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Personal experience with abortion care and/or supporting someone else in getting abortion care

  2. Prior work or educational experience in social work, public health/healthcare, social justice and/or nonprofit context is preferred, with a great track record in teamwork, interpersonal communication, handling a high-stress environment, creative strategizing, and juggling priorities

  3. English proficiency is required

  4. Utmost appreciation and 100% compliance in maintaining confidential client communications, documents, and other related information

  5. Prior remote work experience

  6. Savvy at travel planning (i.e. bus, train, flight bookings) and troubleshooting logistically difficult situations 

  7. Proficient in Google Applications, Airtable, Signal, and Slack

  8. Excellent communication skills, and culturally sensitive disposition; position requires interaction with individuals from a variety of backgrounds with varying levels of education and great financial constraints. You must treat all individuals with dignity and respect, even in challenging situations.

  9. Proficiency in other languages by heritage speakers are highly valued (we specifically have a need for native Spanish speakers).

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  1. Annual pay is $80,000

    1. Candidates with fluency in Spanish will receive an additional $5,000 if utilized in their job.

    2. An additional $2,000 will be added to each position if the right candidate has previous experience with an abortion fund hotline.

  2. Paid time off

    3. At least two (2) one-week-long staff breaks

  3. Health insurance stipend to cover an individual Marketplace plan up to $900 for combined premiums AND out of pocket insurance costs

  4. 5% retirement contribution, regardless of employee match

  5. Costs of home office stipends

  6. 16 week FT paid parental leave for new dependents, followed by optional PT two month transition period. Additional support is offered for extenuating circumstances such as single parenthood, multiples, and extended post-natal medical needs. Leave is highly flexible and can be altered based on the needs of the staff member.

COMMITMENT

While not required, MAC asks that before accepting an offer, the person who is eligible for this position carefully considers their life and its demands over the next 12 months. Consistency in staffing has a direct impact on the consistency of our client support services.
