The Senior Cloud Engineer is a hands-on technical leader responsible for building, operating, and evolving AbsenceSoft’s AWS infrastructure. This role owns Infrastructure as Code, release operations, incident response, and platform reliability while working closely with development teams to enable rapid and safe software delivery. The position requires deep AWS expertise, strong Terraform skills, and the ability to balance operational excellence with strategic platform improvements. The Sr. Cloud Engineer participates in on-call rotations, leads technical initiatives, and ensures the platform meets availability SLAs and security compliance requirements.

What You’ll Do 

  • Design, build, and maintain Terraform modules and configurations across multiple AWS accounts. 
  • Build and improve CI/CD pipelines to support application and infrastructure deployments.
  • Manage ECS task definitions, container images, and deployment orchestration.
  • Own VPN operations, AWS IAM permissions, and network infrastructure.
  • Implement infrastructure automation to reduce manual work and improve reliability.
  • Execute and coordinate production release operations, including validation and rollbacks.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and incident response activities.
  • Build and maintain monitoring dashboards and alerts for proactive system health management.
  • Implement and operate secure infrastructure aligned with AWS best practices and compliance standards.
  • Conduct capacity planning and identify cost optimization opportunities in AWS environments.
  • Respond to and fulfill infrastructure service catalog requests while maintaining proper documentation.
  • Collaborate with development teams, participate in architecture reviews, and mentor peers on best practices.
  • Participate in a highly compliant environment while assisting to maintain company controls and security within your job role.  
  • Assist in maintaining applicable organizational security and compliance controls within your department, role, and subordinate’s roles.

What’ll Set You Up for Success 

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or equivalent education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering roles.
  • 3+ years of hands-on AWS experience in production environments. |
  • Strong Terraform experience, including module development and CI/CD integration.
  • Production experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins preferred).
  • Experience with container orchestration platforms (ECS required; Kubernetes a plus).
  • Strong Linux/Unix systems administration background.
  • Experience participating in on-call rotations and incident response for production environments. 

Preferred Skills:

  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, Security Specialty).
  • Experience with Kubernetes (EKS).
  • Prior work in healthcare, HR tech, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Experience with messaging platforms (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  • Contributions to open-source infrastructure projects.
  • Background in cost optimization and FinOps practices. 

Key Skills & Behaviors: 

  • Advanced expertise in AWS services including EC2, ECS, RDS, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, GuardDuty, KMS, and S3.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform required; CloudFormation a plus). Strong knowledge of CI/CD tools (Jenkins required; GitLab CI or GitHub Actions a plus).
  • Experience with container technologies such as ECS, Docker, and ECR.
  • Ability to build and manage observability platforms (DataDog, SumoLogic, CloudWatch, PagerDuty).
  • Strong scripting skills in Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Proficiency with Git-based version control systems (GitHub/GitLab).
  • Knowledge of AWS security best practices, secrets management, and certificate management.
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including RDS (PostgreSQL, MySQL), DynamoDB, and Redis.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and prioritize effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on operational excellence and quality.
  • Collaborative mindset with ability to mentor and share knowledge with peers.
  • Knowledge of and ability to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and concepts in cloud infrastructure and automation.
