Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced Construction Laborer to join our new dedicated Greenfield Construction Team. In this role, you will assist with trenching and excavations to detailed specifications. You will also restore sites, install and maintain erosion controls, and serve as the ground person for the heavy equipment operator. This position is ideal for a site work professional who understands trenching, soils, lifts, and density, and wants to grow into equipment operator or field lead. The position will require travel for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as spotter and ground person for the excavation operator, including checking trench depth and grade, and watching for utilities.
  • Trenching using a Ditch Witch or similar piece of equipment.
  • Hand trench with shovels, picks, and other tools.
  • Place bedding and backfill materials per specification, including sand, aggregate base,  slurry, and native soils.
  • Compact backfill in lifts using plate compactors, jumping jacks, and trench rollers to achieve specified compaction density.
  • Moisture-condition soils to achieve optimum compaction.
  • Protect conduit and duct banks during backfill and install warning and tracer tape at the required depth.
  • Photograph each step of the construction activity on a daily basis.
  • Coordinate with the construction lead for inspections from the local agencies and utilities.
  • When required, coordinate with the construction lead for testing labs and special inspections for compaction testing; perform field density testing when required.
  • Restore sites after backfill, including base preparation for paving, topsoil, seeding, and hardscape restoration.
  • Install and maintain erosion and sediment controls and keep sites clean and organized.
  • Set up and maintain traffic control and perform flagging when required.
  • Clean and maintain company provided tools, and trenching and compaction equipment.
  • Report any mechanical issues immediately.
  • Cross-train in the operation of skid steers, loaders, and mini excavators, and support other team tasks as needed.
  • Complete any other assignments and special projects as requested by the construction lead and by management.
  • Adhere to safety requirements and participate in safety meetings. Wear all required and appropriate PPE while on the jobsite.  

Qualifications and General Requirements:

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience as a construction laborer, underground utilities, or trenching.
  • Working knowledge of hand tools and portable power tools.
  • Working knowledge of lift thickness, moisture conditioning, and compaction requirements.
  • Experience operating compaction equipment and small earthmoving equipment.
  • Ability to read basic site plans and trench details.
  • Must have OSHA 10 certification.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Strong dedication to safety with a commitment to following safety protocols.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior OSHA training for excavation and trenching.
  • Experience with electrical, telecom, or utility projects.
  • Other civil work trades such as setting forms, and placing and finishing concrete.
  • Certifications related to construction trades.
  • Experience with EV charging projects a plus.

 

Travel & Schedule:

  • Travel is required up to 75-100% of the time to greenfield project sites across GWP's operating states.
  • Assignments may last several weeks at a time; overnight and extended stays are expected.
  • Work may follow a rotational schedule with planned time at home between assignments.
  • Company-paid lodging, travel, and daily per diem are provided while on assignment.
  • Overtime and weekend work may be necessary to meet project deadlines; flexibility with work hours and extended workdays is required.
