Camp Nurse

 

Position Description
The Camp Nurse is responsible for recommending and providing appropriate physical, mental, and emotional care to all staff and campers. They provide care and administer treatment in accordance with the New York Department of Health (NYDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and the American Camp Association (ACA) standards while being passionate about the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing the safety and well-being of campers and staff under the supervision of the Heath Director and alongside the Camp Social Worker.
  • Work with the Health Team to lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to camp health, wellness, hygiene, and safety.
  • Assist in maintaining, restocking and tracking inventory of supplies, informing the Health Director if anything needs to be ordered.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and sanitized Health Center.
  • Manage Camper Care Plans and maintain accurate records of all visits to the Health Center.
  • Assist with notifying the appropriate staff members of camper allergies, medications, and health concerns, including the Dining Hall Manager, Head Cook, and Unit Managers.
  • Participate in and help lead the screening of incoming campers for any illnesses, infections, bruises, rashes, lice, and other health concerns.
  • Dispense medication, if certified to do so, as prescribed by a physician to campers and staff as indicated.
  • Assess and treat sudden illnesses and follow physician standing orders regarding ongoing or reported medical conditions.
  • Maintain and secure confidentiality of all health forms in compliance with HIPAA. Decisions to release medical information to other staff members will be based on the camper’s needs and caregivers’ authorization.
  • Refer campers and staff to physician’s care at an urgent care clinic or hospital with the approval of the Heath Director and Camp Director.
  • Report incidents, accidents, and illnesses to the Health Director and/or Camp Director immediately and ensure proper documentation.
  • Live locally or on camp property, sharing responsibility with other leadership team members for required on-property evening and weekend coverage.
  • Help ensure that the camp meets ACA and NYSDOH standards; training provided.
  • Administer first aid and guide campers and staff in emergencies; training provided.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, team building, and debriefing.
  • Subscribe to the mission and values of the Girl Scouts by becoming a member.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all staff members, campers, caregivers, and other visitors to camp.
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Model and teach good health practices for all staff and campers.
  • Excellent communicator, calm under pressure, and works as a team player.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding cleanliness, punctuality, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Comply with all personnel policies communicated in staff training and staff manual.
  • Meet and communicate with the Health Director and Social Worker daily.
  • Prepare an end-of-season report detailing the strong points and weak points of this position and suggestions for improvements.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Health Director and Camp Director.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current New York certification in one or more of the following is a must: Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, Physician’s Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician (as per NYS code part 7-2 8A)
  • Current New York State accepted certification in CPR and First Aid or willingness to obtain.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience working with youth and demonstrated ability to manage challenging behavioral situations with youth effectively.
  • Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • Desire and ability to provide care to children and peers in an outdoor environment.
  • Available to work for the entire summer season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) camp and that work hours are irregular. Candidates must live locally or live on-site and be available to work for the entire summer season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, integrity, self-control, and an ability to adapt well to changing situations.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to succeed in a Sleepaway camp environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pediatric experience helpful.
  • Prior camp/outdoors experience and/or interest in the Girl Scout Program and Leadership Experience.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while leading programming.

 

Required

  • Candidates must be available to attend ALL trainings as needed (June 23rd – July 6th) in preparation for the summer program and work for the ENTIRE 5 weeks of camp and clean up (July 7th – August 11th). Additional certification classes may also be required. Those applicants who cannot attend these training dates will NOT be considered.

 

Compensation

  • $130 - $160 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications)
  • Room and board while at camp.
  • Time off: Friday evening to Saturday evening each week.
