Assistant Cook

 

Position Description
The Assistant Cook will assist in overseeing kitchen staff to ensure the preparation and timely serving of all camp meals and the maintenance of a consistently clean, safe work environment. They will act in accordance with the New York Department of Health (NYDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and the American Camp Association (ACA) standards while being passionate about the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Cook in overseeing all kitchen and dining hall procedures and policies to ensure that the camp meets ACA and NYSDOH standards.
  • Assume the responsibilities of the Head Cook in their absence.
  • Work with Head Cook to meal plan, place food orders, and track inventory.
  • Responsible for the preparation and on-time serving of all meals, including 3 meals a day plus snacks and cookout orders.
  • Reports to the Head Cook and closely collaborates with the Head Cook and Dining Hall Manager to run safe, efficient mealtimes.
  • Works closely with the Head Cook and Health Team to accommodate campers and staff with dietary restrictions, special needs, or food allergies while maintaining confidentiality in compliance with HIPPA.
  • Conduct daily testing of equipment and formal recording of temperature readouts.
  • Check and update temperature charts for all refrigerators and freezers across camp.
  • Report all maintenance issues to the Head Cook and/or Property Manager.
  • Oversee and assist with all aspects of maintaining a clean kitchen, ensuring the proper use and care of all equipment (e.g., washing equipment, removal of trash, sweeping/mopping of floor, etc.)
  • Work with the Head Cook, Camp Leadership, and Program Teams to coordinate special event meals (e.g., cookouts).
  • Assist campers and guide staff in emergency situations; training provided.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, team building, and debriefing.
  • Subscribe to the mission and values of the Girl Scouts by becoming a member.
  • Provide excellent customer service to other staff members, campers, caregivers, and other visitors to camp.
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Excellent communicator, calm under pressure, and works as a team player.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding good health practices, cleanliness, punctuality, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Comply with all personnel policies communicated in staff training and staff manual.
  • Communicate with the Head Cook daily and with the Camp Director as needed.
  • Submit an end-of-summer final report of all inventories and records.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Head Cook, Camp Director, or Property Manager.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Holds required certifications or is willing to obtain required certifications on Food Handlers License, kitchen equipment-specific training, etc.
  • Experience in quality and quantity cooking, food managing, and maintaining food inventory within budget.
  • At least 2 years of experience in operating a working kitchen and/or with food preparation for large groups.
  • Familiarity with all NYSDOH, OSHA, and ACA regulations and laws.
  • Ability to operate industrial/restaurant-grade kitchen equipment.
  • Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • Desire and ability to work with and relate to youth and peers in an outdoor environment.
  • Available and must commit to working for the entire summer sleepaway camp season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) camp and that work hours are irregular. Candidates must live locally or live on-site and be available to work for the entire summer season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, integrity, self-control, and an ability to adapt well to changing and challenging situations.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to succeed in a Sleepaway camp environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating any or all of the following: industrial mixer, braiser, slicer, food processor, warming/chilling cabinets, etc.
  • Holds current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.

 

Required

  • Candidates must be available to attend ALL trainings as needed (June 23rd – July 6th) in preparation for the summer program and work for the ENTIRE 5 weeks of camp and clean up (July 7th – August 11th). Additional certification classes may also be required. Those applicants who cannot attend these training dates will NOT be considered.
    • Optional: Year-round, seasonal weekend work is also available.

 

Compensation

  • $100 - $150 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications)
  • Room and board while at camp.
  • Time off: Friday evening to Saturday evening each week.
