Program Director

 

Position Description
The Program Director will manage the Program Team, working with Activity Specialists to co-develop and implement session theme activities that satisfy all badge requirements for Girl Scout campers.They will act in accordance with the New York Department of Health (NYDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and the American Camp Association (ACA) standards while being passionate about the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.

 

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, support, and submit written performance evaluations for the following direct reports/Activity Specialists: Arts & Crafts Specialist, Nature Specialist, Games & Sports Specialist, and Girl Scout Specialist.
  • Collaborate with Activity Specialists to plan and coordinate activity content in line with session themes and badge requirements indicated in the 2024 camp catalogue.
  • Work with the Camp Leadership Team to order supplies, track inventory, and ensure all program areas are fully stocked with what they need to run programming.
  • Work in partnership with the Camp Coordinator to implement camp evening activities.
  • Work with camp leadership to carry out the staff training schedule, teaching specialized training sessions as directed by the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director.
  • Facilitate timely and constructive cross-team communication (i.e. communication with camp leadership, schedule changes, etc.)
  • Support Unit Managers in tracking badge requirement completion.
  • Work closely with the leadership staff on a daily basis.
  • Keeps open lines of communication with all supervisees.
  • Work with other leadership staff to conduct nightly rounds of the camp property.
  • Report all maintenance issues to the Property Manager and Camp Director.
  • Help ensure that the camp meets ACA and NYSDOH standards; training provided.
  • Assist campers and guide staff in emergency situations; training provided.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, team building, and debriefing.
  • Subscribe to the mission and values of the Girl Scouts by becoming a member.
  • Provide excellent customer service to other staff members, campers, caregivers, and other visitors to camp.
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Model and teach good health practices for all staff and campers.
  • Excellent communicator, calm under pressure, and works as a team player.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding cleanliness, punctuality, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Comply with all personnel policies communicated in staff training and staff manual.
  • Meet and communicate with the Assistant Camp Director daily.
  • Prepare an end-of-season report detailing the strong points and weak points of this position and suggestions for improvements.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with children/teens.
  • Ability to guide and supervise other adults.
  • Knowledge and/or background in program design and development.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be cleared to drive the council’s leased/owned vehicles through the council’s insurance agency.
  • Experience working with youth and demonstrated ability to manage challenging behavioral situations with youth effectively.
  • Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • Desire and ability to provide care to children and peers in an outdoor environment.
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) camp and that work hours are irregular. Candidates must live on-site (or live locally) and be available to work for the entire summer season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, integrity, self-control, and an ability to adapt well to changing situations.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to succeed in a Sleepaway camp environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1 year experience supervising adults.
  • Prior camp/outdoors experience and/or interest in the Girl Scout Program and Leadership Experience.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while leading programming.

 

Required

  • Candidates must be available to attend ALL trainings as needed (June 23rd – July 6th) in preparation for the summer program and work for the ENTIRE 5 weeks of camp and clean up (July 7th – August 11th). Additional certification classes may also be required. Those applicants who cannot attend these training dates will NOT be considered.

 

Compensation

  • $130 - $150 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications).
  • Room and board while at camp.
  • Time off: Friday evening to Saturday evening each week.
