Position Description
The Aquatics Director will direct, supervise, and maintain aquatic program areas, including pool and boating docks. The Aquatics Director will act in accordance with the New York Department of Health (NYDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and the American Camp Association (ACA) standards while being passionate about the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate pool activities (swimming) and lake activities (boating and fishing).
  • Supervise and mentor staff, manage staff schedules, and inventory supplies/equipment. 
  • Take an active role in risk management and camper safety.
  • Establish and facilitate an effective “Buddy” system.
  • Maintain all safety standards and equipment according to NYDOH and ACA standards.
  • Keep accurate records of pool maintenance.
  • Plan, implement, and lead the Junior Lifeguard camp session.
  • Set up lifeguard and CPR/first aid demonstration areas and teach skills to staff and campers of all ages.
  • Maintain camper records and assist in all aquatic programs.
  • Report all maintenance issues to the Assistant Camp Director and Property Manager.
  • Keep open lines of communication with the Assistant Camp Director on a daily basis.
  • Participate in and lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to water safety and risk.
  • Develop an ongoing lifeguard in-service training and performance evaluation schedule.
  • Supervise and submit written evaluations for all staff hired as lifeguards.
  • Daily monitoring of water at the pool and waterfront
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Assist campers and staff in emergency situations.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, team building, and debriefing.
  • Model program participation and appropriate camper interaction.
  • Comply with personnel policies and work as a team player.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding cleanliness, punctuality, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Subscribe to the mission and values of the Girl Scouts by becoming a member.
  • Provide excellent customer service to other staff members, campers, caregivers, and other visitors to camp.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience working with children.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard (LGT) Certification and 2 or more years as a pool and/or waterfront lifeguard.
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification from the American Red Cross (or accepted equivalent).
  • Current NYS-accepted Lifeguard Management Certification, or willingness to obtain.
  • Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
  • Experience teaching and supervising waterfront and pool activities.
  • Ability to accept guidance, performance feedback, and supervision.
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • Ability to work with and relate to children and peers in an outdoor environment.
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) camp and that work hours are irregular. Candidates must live on-site and be available to work for the entire summer season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • Demonstrate compassion and sensitivity to the needs of campers.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, integrity, self-control, and ability to adapt well to changing situations.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision.
  • Prior camp experience and/or interest in the Girl Scout Program and Leadership Experience.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while leading programming.

 

Required:

  • Candidates must be available to attend ALL trainings as needed (June 23rd – July 6th) in preparation for the summer program and work for the ENTIRE 5 weeks of camp and clean up (July 7th – August 11th). Additional certification classes may also be required. Those applicants who cannot attend these training dates will NOT be considered.
    Compensation
  • $100 - $150 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications).
  • Room and board while at camp. 
  • Time off: Friday evening to Saturday evening each week.
