Seasonal Position Description:

Responsible for providing and advising on appropriate physical, mental, and emotional care of all campers and staff. Must provide care and administer treatment in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), New York Department of Health (NYDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and the American Camp Association (ACA) while being passionate about the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.


Responsibilities before Sleepaway Sessions:

  • Order medical supplies, conduct inventory, and assist in the set-up of the Health Center.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and sanitized Health Center.
  • Stock and maintain first aid kits for specified activity areas and units.
  • Participate in and lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to camp health, wellness, hygiene, and safety, including, but not limited to, standard precautions, how to administer aid, and what type of aid is needed more than general first aid.
  • Assist in creating and managing Camper Care Plans and maintain accurate records of all visits to the Health Center.
  • Notify the appropriate staff members of camper allergies, medications, and health concerns, including the Dining Hall Manager, Head Cook, and Unit Managers.
  • Establish and implement a system for health screening for arriving campers and staff.
  • Screen incoming campers for any illnesses, infections, bruises, rashes, lice, and other health concerns.
  • Subscribes to the mission and values of Girl Scouts by becoming a member.

 

Responsibilities during Sleepaway Sessions:

  • Responsible for overseeing the safety and well-being of campers and staff.
  • Manage the Health Team and act as supervisor to camp nurses and/or EMTs.
  • Willingness to communicate and confer with a local physician for camp policy and procedure approval.
  • Administer first aid and guide campers and staff in emergencies.
  • Dispense medication as prescribed by a physician to campers and staff as indicated.
  • Assess sudden illnesses and follow physician standing orders regarding ongoing or reported medical conditions.
  • Take responsibility for calling and seeking guidance from a physician when warranted.
  • Maintain and secure confidentiality of all health forms in compliance with HIPAA. Decisions to release medical information to other staff members will be based on the camper’s needs and caregivers’ authorization.
  • Refer campers and staff to physician’s care at an urgent care clinic or hospital with the approval of the Camp Director.
  • Provide excellent customer service and confer with campers’ caregivers, as necessary.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, team building, and debriefing.
  • Report incidents, accidents, and illnesses to the Camp Director immediately and ensure proper documentation.
  • Report suspected child abuse to the appropriate authorities immediately and inform the Camp Director as soon as possible.
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Model and teach good health practices for all staff and campers.
  • Excellent communicator, calm under pressure, and works as a team player.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding cleanliness, punctuality, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Comply with all personnel policies communicated in staff training and staff manual.
  • Meet and communicate with the Camp Director daily.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Camp Director.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current New York certification in one or more of the following is a must: Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, or Physician’s Assistant (as per NYS code part 7-2 8A).
  • Current New York State accepted certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Be at least 25 years of age.
  • Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience working with children.
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • Desire and ability to provide care to children and peers in an outdoor environment.
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) camp and that work hours are irregular. Candidates must live on-site and be available to work for the entire summer season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • Days off must be scheduled in advance/at the time of hire and are subject to availability of position and responsibilities coverage.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers, providing expert and empathetic trauma-informed care.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, integrity, self-control, and an ability to adapt well to changing situations

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior camp experience and/or interest in the Girl Scout Program and Leadership Experience.
  • Pediatric experience helpful.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.

 

Required:

  • Candidates must be available to attend ALL trainings as needed (June 23rd – July 6th) in preparation for the summer program and work for the ENTIRE 5 weeks of camp and clean up (July 7th – August 11th). Additional certification classes may also be required. Those applicants who cannot attend these training dates will NOT be considered.

 

Compensation:

  • $225 - $325 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications). 
  • Room and board while at camp.
