Position Overview:
The Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg (the Foundation) has a bold mission to achieve health equity through race equity. We advance anti-racist practices and policies to improve the lives of all Pinellas County residents, and our employees are passionate about this shared purpose.
The Chief Strategy Officer (CSO / they) is a key member of the executive leadership team responsible for strategy development and deployment, with direct oversight of the Foundation’s grantmaking, strategic initiatives portfolio, and research and evaluation activities. The CSO is responsibility for ensuring the highest and best deployment of strategies, leveraging opportunities of timing and momentum to bring impact to the Foundation’s mission. The CSO will work in partnership with the Foundation team, and particularly with the Executive Director of the Center for Health Equity (ED), to realize synergies across the Foundation’s strategic pathways of grantmaking, strategic initiatives, and the Center for Health Equity.
The CSO oversees a significant portfolio of work through their team, may also directly manage high profile strategic Foundation initiatives, and is responsible for the successful execution of programmatic projects and programs as agreed to in the Foundation’s annual plans. The CSO will supervise the Director of Grant Management and Administration, the Strategic Initiatives Manager, and the Research and Evaluation Manager. The CSO will be a strong people manager and will bring out the best in their staff through coaching, thought partnership, setting clear expectations, and ensuring roles are goals are properly resourced. The CSO will co-create synergy that will collaborate closely with the Executive Director of the Center for Health Equity, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, Communications Manager, and external partners.
Responsibilities:
Primarily responsible for...
· Strategy Evaluation and Implementation. Translates vision and mission into short- and long-term strategic planning and goal development, working with internal and external stakeholders and community members; identifies and leverages significant areas of opportunity in advancing the Foundation’s mission; and marshals sufficient resources to implement the Foundation’s annual areas of strategic focus – while managing the political, social and moral landscape, advancing influence, cultivating relationships and leveraging partnerships.
· Day-to-Day Operations. Provides operational leadership and oversight to the Foundation’s grantmaking, strategic initiatives, research, and evaluation functions. This includes asset management, performance and role management, and programmatic technology, assuring cross-organizational integration, efficiency and effectiveness.
· Program management: The CSO is responsible for oversight of the Foundation’s programs and may directly manage one or more high profile strategic Foundation initiatives. Program management requires strong project management and relationship management skills, establishing clear objectives and timelines, and solid execution.
· Strategic partnerships: Advances current strategic partnerships and identifies opportunities for new strategic partnerships. These relationships amplify the impact of the Foundation’s work and augment its financial, social, and intellectual capital.
· Total Enterprise Risk Management. Oversees implementation of the Foundation’s Total Enterprise Risk Management policy.
· Staff Development. Leads, develops, and authorizes high-quality staff and thought partners as experts and innovators who can independently drive progress; embraces and maintains an exciting team environment that is creative, collegial, respectful, candid, impact-oriented, generative, and highly-collaborative – committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Inspires, delegates appropriate levels of responsibility, ensures processes and resources efficiently and effectively supports staff roles, coaches and mentors, provides timely feedback, and supports staff professional development.
Partners/Assists with...
· Representation and Publication: The CSO will on occasion represent the Foundation on panels, at conferences, seminars, and workshops. The CSO will also, in partnership with the Research & Evaluation Manager, identify opportunities to publish findings, funded projects, and programs created by the Foundation.
· Communications and Evaluation to ensure the stories and impact are shared authentically.
· Success through the Center for Health Equity: The Foundation operates through three strategic pathways: Grantmaking, Strategic Initiatives, and the Center for Health Equity. There is the potential for powerful synergies when these pathways work as an integrated system. The CSO works actively with the Executive Director of the Center for Health Equity, Director of Strategic Grantmaking, and Strategic Initiatives Manager to realize these synergies.
Also expected to...
· Fiscal stewardship and vendor management. In collaboration with the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, assess financial resources required to achieve objectives and develop budgets for grants, strategic initiatives, research, evaluation, and programmatic technology. Manage programs within budget and manage vendor relationships related to program team. Negotiate costs, clearly communicate expectations, coordinate work, and hold vendors accountable for outcomes.
· Data integrity. Ensure Foundation data is accurate and updated for areas related to role, including but not limited to the Foundation’s CRM, grantmaking system, event management, and project management system.
· Special projects and other responsibilities: The Foundation has a small and nimble staff which supports each other’s work across departmental lines. Staff are expected to assist team members during peak periods as needed.
Qualifications and Skills:
· Master’s degree in public health, social work, or affiliated field preferred; Bachelor’s degree and ten years’ experience in social science advocacy setting required.
· Preferred: completed dissertation with an emphasis on any of the Social Determinants of Health, Strategy for Community Impact, and/or Equity in Community Development
· Strong content knowledge in and a champion for health equity, race equity and the tools and science of social change.
· Deep intention to work towards racial equity.
· Deep awareness and understanding of, and sensitivity to, the experiences of marginalized and/or historically disadvantaged people, othering, social exclusion, and cultural difference.
· Prior experience in leadership position in project or program administration.
· Ten or more years of experience in leadership positions with progressively higher responsibility.
· Experience serving as a key influencer, actively engaging and managing diverse internal and external stakeholders, with a demonstrated ability to use both consensus and directive leadership as appropriate.
· Ability to coach, engage, and motivate staff to perform at their highest levels.
· Demonstrated strategic thinking skills.
· Ability to adapt quickly to a changing environment. Possesses strong critical thinking skills with an ability to find new ways of solving old problems.
· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
· Able to organize, prioritize multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a time-sensitive environment.
· Exceptional engagement and relationship management skills.
· Strong public speaking and public outreach skills preferred.
· Experience with project planning and implementation preferred.
· Software proficiency:
§ Required: Demonstrated skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of applications.
§ Preferred: Asana (project management), CRM platforms, Zoom
§ A plus: Fluxx (grant management), CVENT (event management)
· Ability to work from Foundation offices and the Center for Health Equity in St. Petersburg.
· Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.
