SUMMARY

Leverage your customer service, sales, and business skills to support the strategic outcomes and priorities of the Science Center! The Retail Manager leads ScienceShop, Arizona Science Center’s Retail operation, to help generate contributed revenues and enhance the Science Center brand and experience through merchandise and concessions. We seek an energetic manager with a strong vision to move ScienceShop forward both onsite and through e-commerce and satellite locations. The Retail Manager plays a key role in providing excellent service to all Guests, thereby increasing visitation satisfaction.

 

A creative and strategic leader, they oversee all aspects of ScienceShop, including purchasing a curated selection of appropriate goods, developing engaging promotions and merchandising, upholding inventory controls, delivering accurate and timely financial reporting, and training ScienceShop staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Develop strategies, plans, policies, and standards for the ScienceShop retail program to meet or exceed revenue goals and successfully carry out the retail business plan.  
  • Manage annual retail expense budget.
  • Source and test new product offerings to enhance the value of visitation through concessions and retail purchases.
  • Maintain relationships with appropriate vendors.
  • Plan and execute selling events and opportunities to deepen engagement with existing and new audiences.
  • Provide next-level customer service on-site, over the phone, and via digital communications to Guests. 
  • Direct sales activities and provide reporting of retail activity.
  • Work with the Guest Sales and Services Manager to train team members scheduled to work at ScienceShop to excel at serving Guests and create memorable experiences through retail.
  • Model outstanding customer service and sales skills.
  • Work with Marketing to develop, execute, and evaluate sales and promotional strategies to meet goals.
  • Work with Finance and Analytics to ensure sales are properly recorded and used to optimize retail decision-making. 
  • Ensure all team members are informed about new merchandise offerings and upcoming promotions.
  • Play a critical role in helping create a positive, inspiring culture that makes Arizona Science Center one of the best places to work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises 2-4 team members and volunteers as assigned.
  • Maintains schedules and coverage for ScienceShop.
  • Serves as the primary guest-facing manager and sales representative.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Experience with data-driven sales and customer relationship platform technology such as Tessitura and SalesVu.
  • Enjoys crowds and interacting with guests of all backgrounds and ages.
  • Strong project management skills, comfortable with competing deadlines and multitasking.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organized and efficient.  
  • Experience with financial planning and reporting (departmental level).
  • Creative problem solver who can work independently and within a team environment.
  • Passionate about customer service culture.

 

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.
  • 5+ years of retail management experience in a customer service and sales-focused role or equivalent combination of education/experience. 
  • Museum experience is a plus.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information orally and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public. Bilingual is preferred.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS  

Proficiency in computing various figures and amounts, including discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages. Generating, scrutinizing, and managing statistical and financial reports consistently throughout the year, focusing on vital metrics such as inventory, cost of goods sold, return on investment (ROI), sales, margin, and profit and loss statements tailored to ScienceShop.

 

REASONING ABILITY  

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

This job also requires the use of a computer, which will be placed somewhere in the employee's workspace.  The employee must have the necessary keyboard and computer mouse skills and the ability to read a color monitor.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
