SUMMARY

Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is pivotal in fostering meaningful connections with Native American communities and enhancing our outreach efforts.

As the Director of Tribal Relations/Native American Engagement, you will lead initiatives to strengthen relationships with Native American communities, promote cultural awareness, and collaborate on programs that align with the mission of the Arizona Science Center. This role requires a culturally sensitive and collaborative professional with a deep understanding of Native American cultures and a commitment to community engagement.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Develop and nurture relationships with Native American tribes, leaders, and community members.
  • Facilitate open communication and collaboration between the Arizona Science Center and Native American communities.

CULTURAL AWARENESS

  • Promote cultural awareness within the organization and ensure respect for Native American traditions and values.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to integrate cultural sensitivity into programs and exhibits.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

  • Work with tribal communities to co-create educational programs and experiences that resonate with their cultural heritage.
  • Collaborate with education and outreach teams to develop culturally inclusive STEM programs.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

  • Plan and organize events that celebrate Native American cultures, fostering community engagement and participation.
  • Coordinate cultural events, workshops, and activities that align with the interests of Native American communities.

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH

  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to connect with Native American schools and educational institutions.
  • Provide resources and support for STEM education initiatives that benefit Native American youth.

ADVOCACY AND REPRESENTATION

  • Advocate for Native American perspectives and representation within the Arizona Science Center.
  • Collaborate with external organizations to amplify Native American voices in STEM and cultural initiatives.

COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

  • Establish partnerships with Native American organizations, institutions, and leaders to enhance collaborative efforts.
  • Seek grant opportunities to support projects that align with Native American engagement goals.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To succeed in this role, an individual must perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements represent the necessary knowledge, skill, and/or ability.

  • Deep understanding and respect for Native American cultures, traditions, and protocols.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Knowledge of STEM education and the ability to integrate cultural elements into educational programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute events and programs that engage diverse communities.
  • Advocacy and collaboration skills to represent the Arizona Science Center within Native American communities.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor's degree in Native American Studies, Anthropology, Cultural Resource Management, or related field; Master's degree is a plus.
  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) working in Native American engagement, tribal relations, or community outreach.
