JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Science Communicator, Makerspace, plays a crucial role in enhancing the guest experience within our Makerspace by overseeing and facilitating innovative technology based guest engagement. This position plans and facilitates programming using the maker mindset such as leading Mini Maker Experiences, Skill Labs, Creator Courses, and Later Labs. The Science Communicator works closely with the Senior Scientist, Creative Teaching, and Technology, as well as other areas, to support the cultivation of innovation and curiosity, inspiring the next generation of makers and innovators.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Visitor Experience and Guest Engagement

    • Daily, engage with guests offering high quality science communication
    • Lead engaging and interactive workshops within the makerspace
    • Implement effective classroom management techniques when necessary to ensure a positive learning environment
    • Work cross-departmentally to develop and facilitate programs, incorporating a making component
    • Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere that encourages curiosity and exploration

 

Fabrication and Inventory

    • Work closely with staff to assist in designing and fabricating projects as requested for onsite and offsite partners.
    • Prepare and fabricate materials and resources as needed for field trips, craft labs, bad art nights, etc.
    • Oversee inventory of materials and supplies, ensuring adequate stock for planned programming and experiences
    • Collaborate with the team to identify and procure necessary resources

 

Safety Implementation and Training:

    • Monitor and maintain equipment, ensuring the functionality and safety of woodshop equipment, 3D printers, laser cutters, and sewing machines.
  • Implement and enforce safety procedures to ensure the well-being of all participants
  • Conduct regular safety checks and address any potential hazards promptly
  • Train students and adults on the proper use of Makerspace equipment
  • Foster a collaborative and educational atmosphere for hands-on learning experiences

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient in operating and building 3D printing machines.
  • Familiarity with graphic design software, particularly CorelDRAW.
  • Certification in CompTIA A+ is advantageous; additional certifications in relevant areas are a plus.
  • Knowledge of Arizona College and Career Ready Standards.
  • Knowledge of student-centered, inquiry-based, experiential learning approaches.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication and reporting.
  • Skill in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Skill in adapting program content and complexity to the ages and interests of youth and adults

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Two year degree preferred and/or equivalent of at least 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with standard computer applications; proficient in MS Office skills, including Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Ability to read, write, and converse in Spanish, Navajo, or Diné preferred.
