POSITION SUMMARY:

The Learning and Engagement Specialist 1, LES 1, ensures the mission of Arizona Science Center: to inspire, educate, and engage curious minds through science. As part of the Science on Wheels Team, within the Informal Learning Team, LES 1 provides exemplary STEM engagement experiences outside of the museum, within Maricopa County, and neighboring communities.

 

The LES 1 prepares and facilitates engaging STEM activities, demonstrations, programs, and camps. The LES 1 travels to various sites, including schools, libraries, resource centers, and community events. Maricopa County, with occasional overnight travel throughout Arizona, is required. The LES 1 provides quality teaching and community support, collaborates with team members, and fosters engagement for success in learning.

 

The LES 1 offers inclusive and exciting STEM experiences by serving as a friendly, professional, and team-oriented leader with Arizona Science Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

 

  • Prepare, present, and facilitate in-person and virtual hands-on STEM programs for participants in schools, camps, after-school programs, resource centers, libraries, etc.
  • Supervise activities and experiments to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences
  • Educate students PreK – 12 with grade-level appropriate content
  • Set up classrooms and prepare materials for programs
  • Clean, organize, and maintain the upkeep of program materials
  • Communicate with schools/program sites before, during, and after programs
  • Research inquiry-based activities and assist with the creation and implementation of new program content
  • Provide excellent communication with team members and collaborate on projects and programs
  • Assist other teams within the Informal Learning Team, as needed
  • Assist Arizona Science Center in delivering their mission

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform in this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty. The requirements below represent a combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities that would enable an individual to qualify for this position.

 

Education and Experience:

  • A science, education, or museum background is highly preferred.
  • Experience working in an educational setting with a variety of audiences
  • Experience engaging people in interactive and hands-on learning experiences
  • Experience in planning and coordinating activities

 

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to present effectively to diverse audiences
  • Effective and confident public speaking
  • Ability to adapt program content and complexity for a variety of ages and interests
  • Ability to manage and engage large and small groups
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Effective and prompt verbal and written communication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Office, and basic computer functions
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include weekends, early mornings, evenings, and overnights
  • Knowledge of K – 12 education systems, state science standards, and youth development concepts and strategies
  • Understanding of the diverse people and needs in Maricopa County and surrounding communities and commitment to culturally responsive teaching
  • Understanding of and commitment to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI)
