Job Description

DEFINITION: Under general and/or immediate supervision of a Lead Designer, performs a variety of journey level technical drafting, office and field project design work. May exercise functional and technical supervision over less experienced technical staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Designer I – This is the experienced level class in the CAD series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the CAD Drafter I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the moderately complex duties of drafting, traffic control plans and underground design work. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is flexibly staffed and is normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, requires previous work experience.

CAD Designer I

  • This is a civil engineering based position
  • Performs basic design computations with accuracy and quality.
  • Base-map layouts and identifying utilities in design plans.
  • Organize the layout of plans, details and units on the CAD drawings
  • Review and develop traffic control plans in accordance with MUTCD Standards .
  • Prepare a variety of Telecommunications drawings in AutoCAD
  • Translates sketches, verbal and written information into CAD drawings
  • Knowledge of designing underground utilities systems.
  • Quality review of progressive project design work.
  • Assist with training new CAD drafters.
  • Aerial, underground, OSP copper, fiber and substructure design.
  • Telephone industry standards, local telecom practices and procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision when preparing and reading written reports and other work-related documents.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Experience: 3-5 years of increasingly responsible experience performing drafting and technical design work preferable in the related field of telecommunications.

Education: Equivalent to completion of the a High School Diploma with supplemented specialized training in drafting, surveying or a related field.

Salary: $16.00 to $18.00 /hour
