Higher Purpose Co. (HPC) is a 501c3 nonprofit economic justice agency based in Clarksdale, Mississippi, created in 2016 by local Black residents. HPC’s mission is to build community wealth across Mississippi with Black residents by supporting the ownership of financial, cultural, and political power. The Director of Finance & Grants is a critical role at Higher Purpose Co; this position will enhance our organization’s financial health and sustainability, align with our deep economic justice values and passion for change in Mississippi. You will be responsible for the coordination of financial and grant management for the organization. We believe you will thrive if you love accounting, taxes, compliance, grant writing, and fundraising while having fun and making an impact in Mississippi.
Utilize financial and HR software for managing organizational financials, including annual budget, payroll, and bank reconciliation.
Recommend financial decisions related to saving, investing, and acquiring real estate to grow HPC’s assets
Prepare reimbursements, payments, invoices, financial reports, and tax forms in collaboration with the HPC team, accountant, board, and partners
Lead annual audit and implementation of new financial recommendations
Create finance procedures manual and reports with the operations team while maintaining a historical record through well-organized documentation to comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements.
Meet with staff to understand funding needs and assist CEO with maintaining relationships to increase quantity of grants
Responsible for conducting the full range of activities with the CEO & COO to identify, prepare, submit, and manage grant applications and sponsorship requests to foundations, donors, and corporations.
Comply with guidelines and maintain all grant tracking, reporting, accounting related to new or existing grants from corporate/foundation funders or donors.
Develop and enhance systems for contracts and grants administration to deploy funds
Work with HPC team, board, partners, and membership to obtain impact stories that can be used to develop written updates, grant applications, metrics, and reports.
Currently living in Mississippi with the ability to work remotely and in the Higher Purpose Co office as needed plus occasionally working during the evening and weekend with some travel within the United States.
Love for accounting, bookkeeping, grant writing, and fundraising in nonprofit organizations. Certified Public Accountant preferred however not required to apply.
Experience in finance and accounting platforms such as Quickbooks and Bill.com Excellent writing and editing skills: must interact in writing effectively with all levels of the organization, including staff, board members, partners, and funders.
Proficient with the Google Suite of applications (Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, etc.) and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Etc)
Detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to produce high-quality work on deadlines
Thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and energized by the mission of Higher Purpose Co
Minimum of a Master’s Degree with three years paid experience
Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Must genuinely like interacting with people and is empathetic in building relationships.
Must exercise discretion when handling confidential information.
Have the ability to safely and successfully perform the essential functions with the ADA and other federal, state, and local standards.
Ability to lift and carry 20-30 pounds occasionally.
Ability to talk, type, listen, and speak clearly in person, via Zoom, Facebook Live, and over the phone
Compensation & Benefits:
This full-time exempt position. The salary is $55,000 with a competitive benefits package that includes company paid medical, dental, vision, long-term disability coverage, flexible paid time off, $1000 professional development stipend, $4,000 healthcare stipend, 401K with up to 3% company match, a flexible work schedule including working remotely, 14 paid holidays, four weeks of self-care PTO and an annual retreat.
