DSD seeks an experienced and highly motivated Energy Storage and EV Charging Engineer to join our rapidly expanding team. DSD originates, develops, finances, builds, owns, and operates 500kW-10MW solar assets, often enhanced by energy storage and EV charging infrastructure. Given the multiple, significant values that can be garnered via integrating energy storage into both behind- and front-of-meter solar projects, energy storage is quickly becoming an integral part of a significant amount of our project pipeline, and deployed projects. Demand for integrated electricity vehicle charging infrastructure is also surging, with novel opportunities when paired with solar and energy storage. Our solutions have been well-received by the market, and DSD seeks to expand the team with a knowledgeable, creative, distributed renewables professional, who can immediately lead DSD’s efforts by supporting existing offerings while expanding and scaling our future solutions.
The successful Engineer will work extensively cross-functionally, throughout the organization. This position will report to the Senior ESS and EV Engineer and work closely with the energy storage commercial team. A strong applicant will have a deep knowledge of leading storage and EV charging products and be able to serve as the in-house subject matter expert on both the products and integrated configurations that DSD supports currently, be able to successfully lead the technical considerations for evaluating future solutions and ensure their proper integration into our designs. The engineer must be able to support providing guidance for several projects and portfolios concurrently while sustaining rigorous attention to detail, and to adapt energy storage solutions quickly to emerging project-specific constraints and opportunities. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and a track record of success through a previous position with a C&I solar or energy storage developer.
Responsibilities
• Be the internal subject matter expert on technical details of the energy storage and EV charging products DSD supports, throughout a project’s origination, development, and construction stages.
• Know specifics of core hardware products’ spec sheets, install manuals, etc. in order to direct internal engineering resources on best practices. Set the internal design standards required to complete their design and ensure their accuracy and level of detail meets industry standards in all engineering team deliverables related to energy storage and EV charging.
• Be the subject matter expert to respond to technical issues with external entities, as issues arise (eg. subcontractors, utilities, AHJs, financing partners, etc.)
• Specification of all project equipment along with timely management of submittals and requests for information (RFIs) during construction
• Provide direction for balance of plant installation requirements, so that internal engineering teams can deliver accurate scopes to estimating and project management teams. Provide feedback to those teams, as project details are refined.
• Understand the technical nuances, and tradeoffs for AC- and DC-coupled ESS solutions. Ability to guide modeling of solar + storage system production (eg. reflective of ESS roundtrip efficiency losses, or salvaged PV clipping), a plus.
• Understand utility policy and power system constraints in key markets (notably CA, MA, NY), to find economic and efficient metering, communications, & protections solutions to interconnection issues (eg. telemetry, reclosers, reverse power relays, etc.).
• Work closely with product management to understand hardware lead times, and supply chain issues, as they relate to engineering PV + ESS + EVCI projects.
• Be a primary decision-maker in vetting new ESS and EV charging manufacturers, hardware, and software, as they become part of our DSD commercial offerings, and eventual assets.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical/civil engineering, or related field.
• Professional experience with a solar or energy storage developer, with record of sustained advancement, and ability to find solutions to complex technical issues.
• Working knowledge of ESS control/communications systems and protocols. Deep knowledge of ESS & EV Charging products to enable creative thinking methods to trouble-shoot construction-related issues, as they arise. High level of attention to detail for ESS specific issues, as well as comprehensive solar + storage system architecture.
• Ability to manage multiple competing deadlines and short turnarounds.
• Effective communication skills, for varied audiences.
• Ability to travel to meetings with customers, utilities, AHJs, and project sites as required.
• Experience in AutoCAD, PVsyst, Energy Tool Base, Microsoft Office Suite.
Desired Qualifications
• Professional Engineer Licensure
• Experience trouble-shooting solar + ESS + EVCI system level engineering issues, and how those system components interact.
• Relay protection design and programming (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories)
• Experience specifying, installing and configuring PV + ESS SCADA systems.
• Salesforce and Procore proficiency are a plus.
Additional Eligibility Requirement DSD will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening.
