We are seeking a candidate who has broad experience with the biology, application, and engineering of viral gene therapy vectors (lentivirus and/or AAV).  S/he is expected to apply their deep experience with experimental concepts from conceptualization to design to execution, data analysis and documentation, and to mentor and manage the work of direct reports. This position will help drive the development of Spirovant’s Gene Therapy programs through a combination of hands-on experimental work in the laboratory, while providing strategic direction for a team of scientists responsible for the evaluation and development of AAV- and lentivirus-based gene therapeutics specifically engineered for delivery to the airways.

This role will report to the VP, Research, and work closely with other Spirovant functional leads to ensure timely completion, accurate reporting, and detailed documentation of pivotal biological and pharmacological studies.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

·        Recruiting, managing, mentoring, and motivating a team of highly capable scientists

·        Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project success

·        Identifying, developing, and implementing operational improvements and novel technologies to improve gene therapy technologies and methods to determine functional activity

·        In collaboration with senior leadership, develop strategic and operational vision for the organization

·        Ensuring the development of appropriate, well-characterized and high-quality assays to address biological hypothesis and to support regulatory filings

·        Summarizing, interpreting, and presenting scientific data to senior management and external stake holders.

·        Ensuring that scientific and technical challenges are resolved in a timely manner

·        Contributing to budget and goal planning

·        Contributing to a safe, efficient, and effective environment with personal accountability

·        Participating in project related teams and other internal/external collaborations

·        Preparing and reviewing presentations, publications, and regulatory non-clinical documents

Education and Skills Requirements:

·        Ph.D. with 6+ years related experience or MS/BS with 8+ year related experience with a degree in Molecular Biology, Virology, or a related field

·        Experience in the design and implementation of characterization and/or functional assays for optimization and evaluation of viral vectors or biologic products is required

·        Ability to positively represent the Spirovant Research and Development Team internally/externally

·        Ability to work seamlessly with cross functional stakeholders within Tech Ops including Process Development, Analytical Development and other teams across the organization

·        Provide overall project management and direction to the function and be accountable for departmental deliverables

·        Ability to gather internal/external benchmarks for best practices in the scientific field

·        Strong communication and interpersonal skills to help build strong relationships within and across various drug discovery and development functions

·        Demonstration of leadership and ability to foster a team environment

Preferred Experience includes:

·        Experience with respiratory disease models and cystic fibrosis in particular

·        Experience with fluorescent and electrophysiological methods of analysis
