OVERVIEW 

Green City Force’s Social Enterprise is seeking alumni for another round of the NYCHA Tree Inventory. NYCHA and GCF have been partnering on this project which will support NYCHA’s Climate Mitigation plan while creating employment for graduates of GCF’s corps. NYCHA seeks to collect an inventory of all trees within high-heat-vulnerable communities and to conduct an assessment of green space use. As a member of the Social Enterprise team assigned to this project, you will be trained on and expected to supervise a team of three Tree Analysts who will collect data about trees in NYCHA. As a Tree Inventory Crew Leader, you will be trained in the necessary procedures and technology and be responsible for ensuring your team is identifying and confirming the life of different tree species and collecting data across different housing complex locations for new green space ideas, data integrity, and maintaining project timelines. This work will take place throughout multiple NYCHA developments across the city. 

You are expected to lead your team in engaging and educating community members on project purpose, progress, and outcomes. The team will also have the opportunity to train on tree planting and maintenance.

KEY SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Work closely with the Social Enterprise Senior Project Manager to onboard and train your team

  • Supervise a team of three Tree Analysts that includes continuous coaching and providing any written feedback, completing timesheets, and tracking field activities

  • Work closely with the Social Enterprise Senior Project Manager to escalate any additional coaching opportunities, productivity challenges, and project progress

  • Manage attendance and daily activities

  • Lead team in the engagement and education of NYCHA residents and community stakeholders on tree inventory plan, outcomes, and impact

  • Coordinate data collection related to tree inventory; troubleshoot and build the capacity of your team to ensure that data is logged and reported timely and accurately.

TREE INVENTORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Conduct online training (video conferencing is required), and outdoor work activities on NYCHA campuses

  • Collect baseline tree inventory data 

  • Perform tree health assessments 

  • Conduct interviews with grounds staff 

  • Collect measurements of all trees with measuring tape 

  • Conduct interviews with tenants and NYCHA personnel to collect data on encounters with residents, including ideas for green improvements within their community 

  • Record all data using a tablet and report on progress weekly 

  • Log daily activities 

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS 

  • Candidates must be able to work full-time for the duration of the project 

  • Green City Force uniform required 

  • Alumni who have a demonstrated interest either in land-based work, data collection, and management or related careers 

  • Track record of consistency during the corps and as an alumni 

  • A strong work ethic is very observant, pays attention to detail, and can work independently as part of a small team operating across the city

  • Commitment to youth development, social and economic justice, and sustainable development; passion for Green City Force’s mission.

  • High level of professionalism, integrity, work ethic, accountability, and responsibility

  • Highly organized self-starter; ability to structure tasks, establish priorities, and set goals

  • Ability to solve problems, mediate conflicts, and exercise sound judgment

  • Excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal and motivational skills, excellent collaborative and teamwork skills, comfortable with public speaking.

  • Familiarity and comfort using computer programs such as Google Drive suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms).
