The Green City Force Service Coordinator is an essential field-leader, representing Green City Force (GCF) in the Eco-Hubs and modeling our core values, upholding our mission and vision. As an essential frontline supervisor, they lead, coordinate, and motivate teams of up to 20 young adults between the ages of 18-24, all residents of public housing or the New York City Public Housing Authority (NYCHA) enrolled as AmeriCorps members. 

The Service Coordinators are responsible for ensuring that service delivery, support of Corps Member development goals, and Eco-Hub operations including but not limited to Eco-Hub production and other hands-on activities are accomplished on a day-to-day basis. These activities include urban agriculture, composting, clean energy projects across New York City, and educating NYCHA residents about key sustainability initiatives both at Eco-Hub sites and other NYCHA developments. While the Service Coordinator position is based primarily in the field, they are required to manage administrative duties related to team management, documentation, and data reporting.

Service Coordinators are in the field 80% of the time, spending 20% of their time in Green City Academy, GCF’s classroom component of the Service Corps. The main responsibility of the Service Coordinator is supervising AmeriCorps members and leveraging their team to accomplish community-centered service goals. The following responsibilities are listed in the order of priority and percent of time expected. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Corps Member Supervision 

Service Coordinators are responsible for leading a successful team in both service and training. Teams function primarily in their Eco-Hubs but may travel across sites, work on projects across NYCHA developments, and receive training in a more traditionaloom setting. The Service Coordinator is expected to uphold and model GCF’s youth development model regardless of the setting and to work collaboratively with their colleagues across the organization.

Responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • Supervise a team of up to 20 AmeriCorps Members  This includes continuous coaching and providing regular written feedback, completing weekly reporting like timesheets, and tracking field activities. 

  • Manage paperwork regarding Corps Member attendance and daily service activity hours

  • Implement and strengthen GCF’s youth development model from a strengths-based, equitable standpoint. Hold Corps Members accountable towards the fulfillment of their personal development, service commitment, and career/ college goals through the completion of Individual Development Plans (IDPs).

  • Carry out disciplinary processes, including coaching Corps Members in the field, maintaining records, and communicating disciplinary issues to the Program Manager.

  • Reinforce service-learning and work readiness goals by modeling an exemplary professional attitude, demeanor, and performance. Leverage Career Services team and tools to support career exploration and Corps Member understanding of connections between daily activities and their career path. 

  • Work collaboratively with the Program Manager and Operations team to plan and carry out team scheduling and support the delivery of educational and training modules to Corps Members. 

  • Assist in the facilitation of sessions at Green City Academy, Orientation, Energy Service, and other training and special events. Facilitation may include leading training sessions, supporting facilitators with session attendance and participation, and working collaboratively across teams to ensure that the program expectations are met.

  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team (Service leadership, Career Services, Support Services, and Operations) to ensure positive youth development outcomes.

Eco-Hub Maintenance 

Eco-Hubs are closed-loop systems supporting sustainability and health in NYCHA developments. Through green-centered service, Eco-Hubs align food, water, waste, and energy behavior change and neighborhood transformation strategically with local, city, state, national and global goals for climate and equity.


Responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • Coordinate with the Program Manager and Operations Team to ensure a safe work environment; ensure standard signage is present at all Eco-Hubs, and ensure all equipment, infrastructure, and supplies are secured and maintained. 

  • Work respectfully and collaboratively with NYCHA development staff when needed, building strong relationships with Property Management and Caretaker staff as it relates to site safety, security, and the integrity of the Eco-Hub.

  • Collaborate with the Operations Team to coordinate EcoHub logistics that include and are not limited to site deliveries, development, and implementation of Eco-Hub plans, Eco-Hub production, and maintenance needs, composting, etc. 

  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Compost Power team on maintaining the high standards of on-site composting and food scraps collection and processing. 

  • Per guidance from the Operations team, implement the planting, maintenance, and harvesting of the Eco-Hub including, but not limited to soil cultivation, bed prep mulching, watering, weeding, pruning, seed sowing, planting, composting, harvest collection and distribution to NYCHA residents.

Community and Volunteer Engagement

  • Serve as a liaison between GCF and community partners and individuals. Model good relations and appropriate interactions with all members of the community: Corps Members, alumni, and other community members.

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Service and Community Partnerships to maintain community partnerships and cultivate new relationships that strengthen the service program from recruitment and exposure to GCF to community service and service learning opportunities. Serve as GCF representative at community-based meetings.

  • Lead Corps Member in the engagement and education of  NYCHA residents and community stakeholders on various sustainability initiatives and programming, including conducting outreach to attract community members to programs and service projects and increasing participation of residents.

  • Work with the Program Manager and Operations Team to support the coordination of volunteers at the Eco-Hub (including corporate volunteers) and ensure Eco-Hubs have the necessary materials for all volunteers.

Data Collection and Reporting

  • Provide clear, timely, and accurate documentation of Corps Member progress, disciplinary issues, and team outcomes, as requested by the Program Manager.

  • Report any psychosocial barriers to the Support Services Team to ensure holistic outcomes. 

  • Coordinate data collection related to Eco-Hub activities and Corps member training and ensure all data is logged and reported timely and accurately.

  • Provide weekly, or as needed, photo updates and brief narrative reports on the progress of Eco-Hub production, resident engagement, and other sustainability initiatives.

 QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum requirements

  • At least 1 year of direct youth development experience, with a strong preference for experience working with young adults ages 18 – 24 in low-income communities.

  • Commitment to youth development, social and economic justice, and sustainable development; passion for Green City Force’s mission.

  • High level of professionalism, integrity, work ethic, accountability, and responsibility.

  • Highly organized self-starter; ability to structure tasks, establish priorities, and set goals.

  • Ability to solve problems, mediate conflicts and exercise sound judgment.

  • Excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal and motivational skills, excellent collaborative and teamwork skills, comfortable with public speaking.

  • Enthusiasm for, and personal commitment to, healthy sustainable living choices and maintaining a positive work environment that respects equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Alumnus of Green City Force Service Corps strongly preferred, but not required.

  • Familiarity and comfort using computer programs such as Google Drive suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms).

  • Driver's license or permit a plus.
