ReFED is a multi-stakeholder nonprofit central to the movement to reduce food waste in the United States. ReFED was formed in early 2015 to create a Roadmap to Reduce U.S. Food Waste, the first ever national economic study and action plan driven by a collaboration of over thirty business, nonprofit, foundation, and government leaders committed to tackling U.S. food waste at scale. It is our vision to eliminate food waste in order to increase food security, spur economic growth and protect the environment. The Capital & Innovation Manager will play a critical role in influencing a variety of wealth holders and asset classes, as well as a growing network of innovators in order to increase capital flows to viable, scalable food waste solutions. This role will report to the Capital & Innovation Director who is based in Los Angeles, CA.


ReFED’s Capital and Innovation team is at an exciting new stage of growth - productizing its impactful, innovative program offerings piloted over the last two years and investing heavily in the power of ReFED’s highly anticipated and well-capitalized Insights Engine. This is an ideal opportunity for a detail-oriented, analytic, self-motivated and entrepreneurial leader who is passionate about using research, data and analytics to drive influence, as well as social, economic, and environmental impact. The Manager will have a keen ability to communicate complex concepts in ways that drive influence and actions by a variety of investment and innovation professionals.

  •        Investment analyst or associate
  •        Portfolio, project or program management
  •        Business development 
  •        Investor relations


Building relationships with key stakeholders

  •        Forming trusting relationships with and influencing wealth holders including food businesses, commercial investors, private investors, philanthropic investors, and government and asset classes including venture capital and private equity, among others

Inspiring investment into and adoption of food waste solutions

  •        Analyzing various food waste solutions across the maturity and innovation curve in order to understand how much and what types of capital and innovation are needed
  •        Strategizing and coordinating the dissemination of research, data, insights and guidance that spur action by target Capital & Innovation stakeholders 
  •        Supporting programmatic work including ReFED’s challenge platform and other innovation programming, including the annual Food Waste Summit 

     Developing and maintaining influential assets

  •      Own critical Capital & Innovation team assets including the Investment Tracker, Solution Provider Database, Solution Fact Sheets, and Investor Database




  •         4+ years of demonstrated business development, investment, project management and/or analytics experience
  •         Expertise in philanthropy, venture capital, private equity, impact investing, social finance, corporate development, corporate venture, strategy consulting, investment banking and/or entrepreneurship / innovation
  •        Strong capabilities in gathering information, synthesizing, and crafting compelling and relevant recommendations; knowledge of data collection and management
  •        Demonstrated aptitude for analyzing and interpreting data and for synthesizing complex information from multiple sources
  •        Ability to build authentic relationships with diverse stakeholders with proven, strong facilitation skills
  •        Exceptionally detail- and results-oriented with strong organizational skills
  •        Strong project management skills with the ability to work independently and as self-starter
  •       Solid professional writing and verbal communications skills
  •        A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
  •        Comfort with ambiguity and ability to thrive in a fluid, entrepreneurial environment, and willingness to “roll up the sleeves” and extend beyond formal responsibilities as needed for the work
  •        Proficiency with G Suite, MS Office Suite, and database management (including Salesforce) with a willingness and ability to learn new systems and tools

Strongly Preferred

  •        Strong working knowledge of food systems and sustainability
  •        Knowledge of the entrepreneurial landscape of food waste, or alternatively, of one of the following sectors: food and agriculture, energy, waste / resource use
  •        Demonstrated success working to promote diversity, equity and inclusion and working with remote teams
