The Engineering Intern – R&D will support Medacta USA in product development activities relating to Joint and/or Spine implant and instrument systems. Primary responsibilities focus on the design and development of orthopedic tools and devices, specifically in supporting the MyInstrument platform. The 14-week program will focus on three major objectives: (1) education, (2) design and development, and (3) an individual-specific assignment within a specific project. The position is located at the Medacta USA headquarters in Franklin, TN.

Medacta has leveraged its orthopedic expertise and comprehensive understanding of the human body to develop the sophisticated "MySolutions"​technology, which offers surgeons highly personalized pre-operative planning and implant placement methodologies by creating advanced personalized kinematic models and 3D planning tools for use in hip, knee, shoulder and spine procedures.

Minimum Educational Requirements

Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in biomedical or mechanical engineering. At least 50% degree completion is required. A minimum GPA of 3.0 Cumulative is strongly preferred.

Minimum Experience Requirements

Any existing short-term professional/educational experience (project aimed at degree dissertation or other specific projects) is required.

Minimum Skill Requirements

Proficiency in Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (i.e. Solidworks). 3D printing and prototyping experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Management, leadership, and organizational ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to maintain tact, poise, and discretion in handling confidential matters. Highly organized and detail oriented. Ability to convey complex information in understandable terms to individuals at all educational levels. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently. Excellent time management skills.

Equipment or Machines Used

Solidworks, 3D Printing, PC, Microsoft Office software suite, general office equipment.

Principal Duties

·         To understand and implement the engineering design process to a specific-MyInstrument project.

·         To be able to create 3D models and design, technical drawings, and prototypes using CAD software (Solidworks).

·         To develop a working knowledge of joint (hip, knee, and shoulder) and/or spine anatomy.

·         To understand the surgical technique and functionality of instrumentation associated with Medacta product line(s).

·         Basic proficiency with the Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is required

·         Able to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills, excellent communication and presentation skills and leadership qualities are required.

·         Ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives while maintaining a strong sense of urgency.

·         Must be a self-starter with ability to work independently within a matrix environment where tight timelines exist

·         Candidate must have reliable transportation to and from work on a daily basis for the duration of the internship.
