Access Institute for Psychological Services is a community-based nonprofit providing high-quality, affordable mental health care to individuals and families with the greatest need and least access. For more than 23 years, Access Institute has delivered over 13,000 hours of care annually to more than 700 children, adults, and seniors. Our work spans our Hayes Valley clinic, five public elementary schools, and the Bayview–Hunters Point Adult Day Health Center. 

Access Institute is home to a rigorous, nationally renowned psychoanalytic training program for predoctoral interns and post-graduate fellows. Trainees receive extensive in-person supervision while gaining clinical experience and engaging in a rich didactic education program that integrates psychodynamic theory, sociocultural awareness, and community service. 

 

Position Overview 

Access Institute seeks a dynamic and passionate individual to join its clinical team as an In-school Psychotherapist (ISP). The ISP provides mental health services, consultation, and support for staff at one K-8 SFUSD elementary school, with two campuses (near Pacific Heights/Marina districts). These services include individual play therapy on-site, and consultation to parents, teachers, and school staff to support healthy relationships with children dealing with trauma and diverse mental health needs. The ISP must be available to work on-site at the school two days per weekThe two service days are flexible Tuesday-Friday, but days must remain consistent for the duration of the school year. 

We are looking for an individual with strong clinical, leadership, and communication skills who enjoys building relationships and working with underserved populations. The ISP reports to the In-School Mental Health Program Managerwith support from the Director of Operations, and Executive Director as needed.  

 

Core Job Duties:  

  • Provide 1:1 mental health support to up to 8 children, up to 4 sessions per day (8 hours) 

  • Maintain patient charts (1 hour) 

  • Provide education, consultation, and support to parents and caregivers (1 hour) 

  • Collaborate and consult with school staff, including: (1 hour) 

  • Classroom observation and feedback for teachers 

  • Consultation and ongoing communication educators, staff, and other service providers; 

  • Participation in school meetings, as requested 

  • Assist in the collection of data on program effectiveness by administering brief surveys to teachers and caregivers at the beginning and end of the school year. 

  • Weekly supervision with fully licensed Staff Psychotherapist & In-School Mental Health Program Manager (1 hour) 

 

Requirements:   

  • Demonstrated commitment to Access Institute’s mission 

  • Experience providing mental health care to childrenprior experience working in school-based settings a plus 

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills 

  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills
