About Soleil Labs: Based in South San Francisco, Soleil Labs is a biotechnology company devoted to the discovery of originator biopharmaceutical medicines across a range of therapeutic areas. Uniquely integrated with the dedicated TCG Labs venture fund, we are building Soleil Labs with a single goal in mind: the time- and resource-efficient translation of compelling scientific insights into promising therapies. This distinctive environment offers drug hunters an unparalleled opportunity to become essential members of a collaborative and fast-paced team enduringly positioned for the discovery of exciting new therapeutic candidates.
About the Position: Soleil Labs is seeking an experienced Director of Protein Sciences with a strong track record of advancing biologics-focused therapeutic pipelines to lead and grow our protein engineering, production, and characterization capabilities. As part of a dynamic and collaborative Biologics group, the Director will be a hands-on leader of a team of scientists responsible for construct design, protein expression, purification, and biophysical/structural characterizations of diverse antibody-focused therapeutic modalities, reagents, and proteins. This role will implement new technologies as needed and streamline workflows to increase throughput and efficiency. The Director will work collaboratively with colleagues in Antibody Discovery, Biology, Process Development, and on project teams.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and grow a team of scientists that have diverse expertise spanning structural modeling/engineering, expression, purification, and biophysical and biochemical characterizations to support the therapeutic candidate discovery and selection process.
- Develop protein and antibody engineering capabilities to enable the design and optimization of antibody-based therapeutic modalities for diverse indications.
- Drive the development of robust expression and purification processes for small to medium scale antibody-based modalities. Implement automation where feasible to enable higher-throughput production workflows.
- Establish criteria and workflows that incorporate analytical assays to enable efficient evaluation and selection of stable, effective, and developable therapeutic antibody candidates.
- Implement analytical and mass-spectrometry workflows to elucidate quality parameters for characterizations and developability assessments of to characterize for antibody candidate characterizations.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in the area of protein sciences across different cross-functional teams.
- Be a creative problem solver and a role model for your direct reports and colleagues.
- Provide scientific direction, growth opportunities, and career development for your team.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. with minimum 10 years of relevant experience in therapeutic biologics research.
- Prior industry experience with antibody and protein therapeutic discovery and lead candidate selection, and working on cross-functional collaborative teams.
- Broad subject matter experience spanning engineering, production, and characterization of therapeutic biologics and the ability to guide a team that has deep expertise in these areas.
- A hands-on leadership style willing to lead from the bench as needed to support therapeutic candidate discovery and selection activities.
- Technical expertise in engineering antibody and protein focused formats suitable for therapeutic development, and knowledgeable of protein expression in host systems including mammalian transient and stable, and E.coli.
- Deep understanding of the production of diverse biologics formats including bi- and multispecific antibodies and fusion proteins, and difficult-to-handle antigens including some membrane proteins.
- Experience with diverse purification approaches for different antibody formats, analytical characterization (SEC-HPLC, cGE, mass spec, cIEF, SEC-MALS), and developability assessment (thermal stability, poly specificity, hydrophobicity, forced degradation, serum stability) is required.
- Experience with implementing laboratory automation and developing high-throughput processes to improve efficiency and process reproducibility.
- A track record of being an outstanding leader and collaborator that has a can-do attitude towards problem solving and is a role model for reports and colleagues.
- Committed to growth and development of direct team members and colleagues.
