Islamic Relief USA is seeking a Sanctions Compliance Manager at its headquarters just outside of Washington, DC in Alexandria, Virginia. The Sanctions Compliance Manager will assist the Legal Department in strengthening the organization’s sanctions compliance program and perform other diligence and risk management tasks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of a robust sanctions compliance program at IRUSA.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and conduct legal research into current US sanctions laws and export control laws and regulations under the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control and the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security.
  • Stay current on and provide updates regarding changes in legislation, regulations and other requirements that may result in an organizational response.
  • Stay current on relevant industry and government compliance program guidance.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on sanctions compliance for other IRUSA departments and initial point of contact for escalations and inquiries from other departments related to potential anti-money laundering (AML) and sanctions issues.
  • Help develop and maintain internal resources on US sanctions laws and regulations.
  • Review sanctions screening software programs for use at IRUSA.
  • Conduct screenings for IRUSA’s programmatic activities using sanctions screening software.
  • Conduct due diligence on potential matches to sanctioned individuals or entities.
  • Maintain adequate evidence supporting review and investigation outcomes related to screenings.
  • Help evaluate the adequacy of screening processes used by IRUSA’s international partners.
  • Coordinate with IRUSA’s Finance Department on addressing financial access matters.
  • Develop and maintain AML best practices.
  • Assist in responses to inquiries from banking partners and regulators.
  • Perform other programs-related compliance and diligence tasks.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and review of policies and procedures relevant to IRUSA’s programs.
  • Help conduct sanctions and AML compliance trainings for other IRUSA departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by IRUSA’s Legal Department.


Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree, required.
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in compliance, with an emphasis in sanctions issues; international experience a plus.
  • Previous experience conducting due diligence related to Sanctions, Negative News and/or Politically Exposed Person (PEP) concerns.
  • Basic knowledge of U.S. and other relevant sanctions or anti-money laundering laws. • Must possess excellent written and oral communications skills, with the ability to communicate skillfully with diplomacy and tact.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to perform duties with deliberate speed and accuracy without immediate supervision.
  • Excellent social and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact with culturally diverse staff.
  • Fluency in English and Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to work from IRUSA’s Alexandria, VA or Saddle Brook, NJ offices on a hybrid schedule.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.


The base pay range for this role is $ 65,000 - $83,000.
